FROM NICHE TO MAINSTREAM: FORD CENEX EXPO 2024 Cutting-Edge Advanced Composites and Adhesives Three years ago Prof. Alan Banks set a bold vision in motion: to prove that the UK's R&D capabilities are world-leading and to secure vital skills and jobs within the nation. This vision, a collaboration between Ford and its partners Advanced Propulsion Centre UK, Gestamp, Expert Technologies Group, WMG, University of Warwick, has yielded remarkable results, pushing the boundaries of automotive manufacturing. The project aimed to break the mould of traditional materials. Previously, advanced composites and adhesives were limited to niche applications due to production challenges. Ford and its partners tackled this head-on, Ford not only invested over £3M (£1.2M funded) to secure 650 Ford Transit jobs, successfully demonstrating that these materials could meet rigorous and gruelling Ford PASCAR program, proving its exceptional durability and exceeding expectations. This R&D project wasn't just about pushing the limits of materials, but within a compressed timeframe, the team moved from concept to implementation readiness, conducting extensive testing to validate the technology. This achievement transcends niche applications, marking a significant advancement in automotive R&D. The journey wasn't without its challenges. The team learned valuable timing and program application lessons, further solidifying their commitment to continuous improvement. This groundbreaking success will be showcased at Cenex Expo and a subsequent event at the Dunton Campus. Ford and its partners are poised to share their expertise and inspire the next generation of automotive innovation. #DualStudies at Schaeffler: We asked our dual students what they particularly like about the practical part of their studies at Schaeffler. From the lecture hall to the racetrack: 📖🏎️ For Tim, the dual study program with us is a dream come true! He is a dual student in the field of mechanical engineering in our "Two in One" program and develops technology for our sports cars on the racetrack as part of the Schaeffler team! For Tillmann, studying at Schaeffler means teamwork. 🤝 "There is no hierarchical thinking and no ego culture. Even as a student, you are a valued colleague whose input contributes to the success of the team." He is studying business administration with a specialization in automotive retailing and particularly appreciates the variety of the course content. Sophia, who is enthusiastic about the versatility of the dual study program at Schaeffler, has a similar view: "My studies give me a very varied everyday life – it never gets boring!" This is also due to the exciting challenges that have to be mastered in the team. Transformation is everywhere When I started in 2008 during the financial crisis at Bosch as a junior buyer, I was not at all aware of the path my professional life would take. I was the happiest guy on earth, being part of such a great team and in a great job. Already then, changing perspectives was key to understanding the needs of our business partners. From purchasing in different roles, I was drawn to the sales of our Electrification team – what an awesome, dynamic area to work in. Changing perspectives played an important role for me here as well, as I clearly understood the needs of our customers. After a short stint as project lead of a change management project, I was honored to join Powertrain Solutions, being responsible for the Office of the Executive (OFE) for the president, also commercially responsible for Powertrain Solutions. This dream role allowed me to be close to the board of management during a time of significant transformation for our company, enriching my working life and teaching me even more about changing perspectives in challenging times. In October 2022, I moved to the Bosch's headquarters in Gerlingen-Schillerhöhe, helping to prepare for our new setup at Bosch Mobility, which went live on July 1, 2024. I am very thankful for the 1.5 years being part of the OFE team for our sector board at Bosch Mobility, focusing on commercial and finance (even though I am not a controller at all 😊). Now, since July 1, 2024, a new chapter has begun for me. I have again chosen to change function, bringing experience from three different functions to the table. As we are in the midst of transformation, I am really happy to be part of the team making it happen. I would like to say THANK YOU to all my former and current leaders who supported me in trying new things and not just following classical career paths. His engagement in the Prince Henry Tour exemplified a clever blend of competition and promotion. At the 1933 International Motor Show in Berlin, it wasn’t just his own innovations that caught Bosch's eye — he was just as intrigued by the advancements of others, a true testament to his belief in collective progress. Bosch's legacy is not merely in the products he crafted but in the broad vision he held for technology's role in enhancing life. Bosch UK & Ireland concluded the 2023 fiscal year with almost £3.5 billion (3.99 billion euros) in consolidated sales, making the region Bosch's fourth largest market overall. This represents growth of nearly 10% over the previous year, and around 7% above pre-pandemic level. Looking ahead, Vonjy Rajakoba highlights, "The economy is showing slow growth, and forecasts are cautious on automotive production and only a weak rebound is expected in consumer spending.
