I'm especially interested in this post by Horizon Care & Education, describing their therapeutic approach with a focus on learning spaces. Many years ago I was a regular contributor for SEND Magazine. One such article was on the learning environment & optimum learning spaces, taking as research an analysis of the teaching spaces for children with SEND across a number of schools. Audits of learning spaces, for highly vulnerable children, included - dining halls, corridors, changing rooms, outside classrooms, outside the HT's office, libraries, IT rooms... Hardly optimum learning environments. Combine that with the number of hours a typical student with SEND is out of the classroom, and there are a host of added difficulties right there. So, lots of words to say, this article pleases me on many fronts. Well done.

An alarming BBC Panorama documentary, “Britain’s Crumbling Schools” highlighted the deteriorating physical state of many British schools (aired January 2024). Not confined to the RAAC fiasco, a high number of education buildings across the country, including outdated temporary classrooms, are falling into extreme states of disrepair, way below the standard that is considered ‘fit for purpose’. A supplier of temporary classroom and sports hall buildings to the education sector, Smart-Space is also known for its permanent building solutions that have resolved many space and environment issues for more than three decades. I always look forward to the new #PDKPoll results, particularly for an update on how the public is feeling about their child/ren entering the teaching profession. In looking at this year's topline data, I find it very interesting (and amusing) to see how much more opinionated on this question the public has become since 1969, when 10% of respondents didn't have an opinion either way. This grew to 22% of respondents in 1983 before a sharp decline to get to single digits in 1993 - today, 1% of respondents replied "no opinion" I have to imagine that the impacts of the release of A Nation at Risk in April of 1983 and the subsequent shift in how we talk about K-12 education and its "failures" (including who to blame for them) is being shown here. In working with state leaders to address teacher recruitment and retention issues over the past several years, the need for a marketing campaign around the positives of being a teacher has been raised every time. This data is a stark reminder that the way we as a field talk about what it means to be an educator matters - not that we shouldn't advocate for higher pay and better working conditions and publicly share student achievement data, but that we probably need to be more considerate of how we do so and aware of the unintended consequences of our attempts to hold people accountable within the unwieldy system(s) of K-12 education in our country.

Alabama is home to rockets, research, and natural resources, but our outdated school funding model holds us back. Small private liberal arts colleges are facing significant challenges that threaten their survival. Rising costs, declining enrollment, and increasing competition from public universities and online programs are forcing many institutions to either merge, close, or restructure. Virginia Intermont (VI) College, which closed in 2014, serves as a poignant example of the pressures these schools face. The recent fire at its former campus is a tragic reminder of the physical and financial deterioration that can follow a college’s closure. VI's library burned, erasing a beautiful example of Art Deco architecture. Many of the other buildings are/were fine Victorian buildings. These institutions are often deeply rooted in their communities, providing not only education but also cultural and economic contributions. As such, their loss can have far-reaching effects beyond their campuses.
