There is no "International law", but only what is decided in Washington, and even the US president has been told he should not use that term, as there is no law behind it and as an American law professor wrote the other day "only people from the losing nation go to Hague". This is why the people charged and detained by the International Criminal Court (ICC) always come from weaker nations – predominantly African – while the US can get away with actually sanctioning ICC staff if they so much as talk about to investigate US war crimes and suffer no consequences for it at all. It is also why in 2002 the Bush administration introduced what became known as the "Hague Invasion Act", stressing that military force will be used to free any US or US-allied military personnel from any attempt by the ICC to prosecute them for war crimes. It is also why Noam Chomsky famously said that if the Nuremberg Laws had continued to be applied with fairness and consistency, then every post-WWII US president would have been hanged.
The problem here should be obvious - If we don't hold our own leaders accountable, we can't hold other leaders accountable. If the law is not applied consistently, it is not the law. It is simply an excuse we use to target our enemies.
We didn't just fail to punish Bush, Blair or you Fogh, etc.: we rewarded them. We re-elected them. We knighted them and unfortunately it's not just about Iraq in 2003, it's about everything we do...
Objectively, the West does not occupy any moral high ground in relation to China, Russia, India, etc. The West holds all records when it comes to imperialism and colonialism in the 19th and 20th centuries, the West's recent aggressions against the peoples of Indo-China, Libya, Afghanistan and Iraq were more serious and more murderous than the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Western actions have resulted in war crimes and crimes against humanity committed with total impunity, thereby creating "precedents of permissibility" now followed by Russia and others.
The problem is that we in the USA, Israel, England, Germany, etc actually believe our own propaganda. It is not a matter of hypocrisy, but a matter of faith. Since high school, we are indoctrinated to believe that we are "the good guys" per definition, and that we have a mission to bring democracy and human rights to the rest of the world. This may sound amazing to a Chinese, an Indian or an African, but the brainwashing of the American and European population has been phenomenally successful. So shouldn't we really start by stopping the crimes we in the "Collective West" commits first?
The responsibility of every reflective person is to look within first!
