3 common nutrition mistakes runners make on race day: 1. Trying something new on race day: Using new products and drinks that have not been trialled during training can increase the risk of 'runners gut' and severely impair race performance 2. Not developing an effective nutrition strategy for the race: A majority of runners do not carb-load effectively in the days before a race and often under-prepare for the race itself - not taking enough gels or fluid with them which can severely impair race performance 3. Not eating or drinking enough during the race itself: In longer duration events, most runners follow a 'fuel by distance' strategy e.g. they eat every 5km however as the runner gets tired, time between refueling increases which may impair performance. You can’t keep doing the same thing, workout or nutrition wise, and expect to keep getting the same results. Our bodies abide by the law of diminishing returns — the longer we try to gain adaptation from 1 stimulus, the less it’s going to work, over time.
