Dyson is an incredibly innovative company. The products are expensive and I’m sure not everyone is a fan, but the engineering is impressive. James Dyson’s story about how he came up with the cyclone inside a vacuum cleaner is very interesting. As the story goes, he spent three years trying to solve the problem with vacuum cleaners losing suction when the dust bag filled up. One day he visited a sawmill to collect some timber. He spotted these large cone shaped units sitting above the saw blades and he asked one of the employees what the cone shaped unit was for. He explained it was cyclone that sucked the saw dust from the cutting blade, spinning and extracting it into a dust collector. He walked out of that sawmill thinking – imagine if I could put a cyclone into a vacuum cleaner. Mr. Dyson wasn’t just a great engineer, he was a persistent one. It took a crazy 5,127 prototypes before he had a production ready cyclone based vacuum cleaner! That’s persistence. He never gave up. This is referred to a recombinant innovation – you take two unrelated areas (a sawmill cyclone + a bagged vacuum cleaner), join them together and invent something completely new. The hyperdymium motors used in the modern Dyson cordless vacuum cleaners are amazing. Imagine something physically spinning at a rate of 2,250 times per second – that is crazy! That’s innovation. That’s engineering. That’s modern motor technology. Motors are used everywhere – in robots, kid’s toys, elevators, electric toothbrushes, kitchen appliances, power tools, drones, electric scooters, electric bicycles, electric cars and much more!
