Positive Education in the UK is growing rapidly. Mellor Primary in Stockport was the first school in the UK to achieve the Everyday Magic Positive Education School status. Recently I sat down with Jim Nicholson, Headteacher at Mellor Primary to talk about why he choose the Everyday Magic training programme for his school, and the impact it has had there on resilience, wellbeing and attainment. Here’s his advice for any schools still considering the Everyday Magic route to positive education. Look out for the full interview coming soon. #positiveeducation #positivepsychology #education

Based on student survey results, the College scored higher this year across all areas of focus including learning opportunities, preparation for career, and learning facilities. I just spent two days on a boat in Doubtful Sound, New Zealand, one of the most remote, tranquil, and beautiful places I’ve ever been. The Sound contains steep cliffs lush with rich foliage and thousands of waterfalls, almost none of them permanent. Rather, they form based on the Sound’s mercurial weather conditions. We woke this morning to fog, pouring rain, and cascading waterfalls where none had been the day before (see photo below.) We were truly isolated, seeing no other travelers or boats while there and totally unplugged from the outside world. I was struck by the name Doubtful Sound, and that Captain Cook had missed exploring it because he was "doubtful" he could successfully navigate through it since he didn’t have the tools he needed. I also reflected on how variable the Sound’s conditions are, which would add to the complexities of navigation. I was reminded of college counseling! The college admissions landscape is also dynamic. It is influenced by a range of complex factors including decisions of political and higher education leaders, global and domestic conflicts, economics, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Indeed, as one example, when I returned to the mainland of New Zealand today and reconnected with WiFi, I saw, among other news, that Dartmouth College announced that it would again require applicants to submit standardized test scores (an issue I will provide insights on otherwise.) At Lantern College Counseling, LLC we provide families with the tools they need to successfully navigate through the ever-shifting college admissions landscape. Doubtful Sound in New Zealand, really a fjord, was named by Captain Cook who was fearful to explore it, noting the winds only ran in one direction (westerly) making it “doubtful” he’d be able to navigate it under sail. He was right to pass up navigating it - with few easterly winds, he did not have the tools necessary to successfully find his way through the fjord and would likely have been stuck. I'll never get tired of saying how much Canadian Association of Gift Planners (CAGP) has added to both my professional practice as an advisor as well as my personal mission as a philanthropist and yesterday's "For the Love of Gift Planning" workshop was no different. Great to catch up with colleagues and meet new connections, as well as hear from guest speakers - here's a few things I learned: Malcolm Burrows is not just plugged into the trends in gift planning like nobody I've ever met, but he also makes a mean Powerpoint deck complete with fine art on every slide. I thought I'd be learning about the crossroads we find ourselves in as an industry, left also with a little bit of art history knowledge. Susan Manwaring hates the terms "in perpetuity" and "endowment" and I now know why. Left her session with a new understanding of the importance of gifting agreements, what can go wrong, and ideally how to get out ahead of those issues. Janine Kuzma BA, CFRE and St. Joe's are doing fantastic work with their professional advisory network and I think that model can be replicated for many #charities especially in the #artsandculture sector to help donors be more strategic in their giving. Michelle Osborne, CFRE and Melissa Pang broke down some of the learnings they had from their digital advertising campaign. Apparently the more emotional-based images don't work as well as the practical ones... good to know. Kimberley Blease kept us from the pub... just kidding. Fantastic research, as always, and I was pleasantly surprised to see the inclination of donors to prioritize arts and culture as recipients of gifts in their wills. Lot of takeaways on that. #conference #cagp #philanthropy #giftplanning #learningeveryday

Yesterday I had the opportunity to attend the outstanding CAGP Greater Toronto Area Chapter Professional Development day, "For the Love of Gift Planning." The wealth of knowledge shared by each speaker made it an incredible experience. I am inspired to apply the invaluable knowledge gained at Kingsway College School!
