🧪🔍 Retraction of High-Profile Reproducibility Study Sparks Reflection in the Scientific Community 🤔❌ A recent retraction of a prominent paper on scientific reproducibility has highlighted the challenges researchers face in ensuring rigorous and transparent studies. The paper, initially published in Nature Human Behaviour, involved some of the leading figures in scientific integrity. 📚 🔑 Key Takeaways: Preregistration Pitfalls: The study claimed to have fully preregistered their research plan, but it was found that some analyses were not preregistered as stated. This raises concerns about the effectiveness and implementation of preregistration in research. 📝⚠️ Complexity of Good Science: The incident underscores that "doing good science is hard," emphasizing the difficulties in managing large, collaborative projects and maintaining strict adherence to research protocols. 🧠💡 Community Reflection: Researchers are using this event as an opportunity to reflect on current practices in open science, preregistration, and peer review processes. It's a call to improve transparency and reliability in scientific research. 🌐🔄 🌟 Why This Matters: The retraction serves as a reminder of the importance of meticulous planning and execution in research. It highlights the need for continuous improvement in methodologies to enhance the reproducibility and credibility of scientific findings. 🏆🔬 💬 What are your thoughts on the challenges of reproducibility in science? Open Science promises a democratization of #knowledge, with the #public gaining access to scientific breakthroughs and #research playing out in a more inclusive environment. However, this exciting prospect comes with complexities. Benefits are undeniable: ⏺ The public gains from the latest discoveries. ⏺ Openness accelerates scientific progress and innovation. ⏺ Studies show increased citations for open-access articles. ⏺ Transparency allows researchers to verify and build upon existing work, strengthening scientific foundations. Challenges remain: ⏺ Ethical considerations around data privacy and confidentiality need to be addressed. ⏺ Open access often relies on universities, authors, and volunteers, raising sustainability concerns. ⏺ Free open-access journals may lack the established impact factor of traditional journals. ⏺ Predatory publishers exploit the open access model for profit, bypassing rigorous peer review. ⏺ The current reward system in academia prioritizes publications in high-impact journals, potentially conflicting with open science values. The question is not "for" or "against" #openscience. It's a noble goal requiring careful consideration within the existing #publishing system (including licensing and patenting). So the question here is: Should open science adapt to the current system, or should the system adapt to open science? Wanna read more ⬇ and share your thoughts? https://lnkd.in/dH3tjgKg

We are happy to present SciConn, a company that aims to revolutionize science communication by educating researchers and students on harnessing the power of social media to make their research accessible, engaging, and impactful to a broader audience. The project aims to support scientists from both academic and industrial environment in many areas such as: 1. Complexity of Information: It helps researchers simplify complex scientific data for non-experts without losing accuracy. 2. Limited Public Engagement: It enhances researchers' ability to engage a broader audience, increasing public understanding and appreciation of science. 3. Misinformation and Public Trust: It trains scientists in effective communication strategies to counter misinformation and build public trust. 4. Underutilization of Social Media: It leverages social media platforms to maximize the reach and impact of scientific research. 5. Interdisciplinary Barriers: It improves communication across scientific disciplines to foster collaboration and innovation. 6. Visibility in Policy Making: It equips scientists to influence policy discussions and ensure science informs policy decisions. 7. Funding Challenges: It assists researchers in expressing the value of their work in proposals to secure funding. 🔔 Follow us for regular content on different social media channels and get in touch for advice.

Does your university host a Science on Tap🍺 event in your community? If not, check out this article on a successful Science on Tap program in Pennsylvania. After surveying attendees, the researchers found: 💡Topics and speakers were the main draw for attendees. 💡56% of respondents reported learning "a fair amount" from the talks. 💡99% of respondents recommended the event to friends. 💡The event acts as a successful bridge between scientists and the public. 💡Fosters community engagement and interest in local scientific topics. Something as simple as a monthly event for an hour or two can help bridge a relationship between the university and the community in which it exists, and highlight some of the great research being produced. And it can be fun! 🍻 #PublicEngagement #ScienceCommunication #SciComm #CommunityEngagement #ResearchCommunication #PublicUnderstandingOfScience

🌟 Exciting Tools for Fellow Researchers! 🌟 I want to take a moment to highlight two incredible tools that have transformed the way we conduct research: Elicit and Zotero. 🔍 Elicit is a game-changer for systematic reviews. It streamlines the process of gathering and analyzing research, allowing you to focus on what truly matters. With its intuitive interface, you can easily extract key information, create summaries, and even visualize your findings. This means less time sifting through papers and more time making impactful conclusions! 📚 On the other hand, Zotero is a powerful reference management tool that keeps all your research organized. It allows you to collect, manage, and cite your sources effortlessly. I have been using Elicit and Zotero together for my doctorate dissertation and integrating these tools into my workflow has led to more efficient and effective outcomes. Have you used Elicit or Zotero in your research? Share your experiences! 👇

Delighted to share our latest preprint (with Dasapta Erwin Irawan, Lonni Besançon, Sandy Herho, Ilham Akhsanu Ridlo, Juneman Abraham) on the evolving role of post-publication review and the impact of science news outlets and social media in maintaining research integrity! 🧵👇 1/ The integrity of scientific research is essential for societal progress. Pre-publication peer review has been a cornerstone of ensuring research quality, but it's not without limitations. 📚 #AcademicResearch 2/ With the rise of digital platforms and social media, these traditional systems are under scrutiny. Our preprint explores how post-publication review can fill gaps, ensuring research remains transparent and credible even after it is published. #OpenScience 3/ Post-publication review allows ongoing assessment of published work, harnessing the collective expertise of the global scientific community. From formal reviews in journals to lively discussions on platforms like PubPeer, it enhances quality control. 🌍 #PeerReview 4/ Science news outlets and social media are now key players in this landscape. By rapidly disseminating findings and fostering public engagement, these platforms help identify both strengths and potential issues in research. 📰 #SciComm 5/ Case studies we discuss—such as the Savaris et al. study on COVID-19 lockdowns and Danny Hilman Natawidjaja's work on Gunung Padang—demonstrate the power (and challenges) of post-publication review in action. 🧑🔬 #ResearchIntegrity 6/ However, challenges remain—post-publication review can sometimes expose the public to flawed interpretations or misinformation. Effective moderation, fact-checking, and journalist expertise are critical in managing this dynamic process. #FactChecking 7/ Ultimately, integrating both pre- and post-publication review creates a more robust system for safeguarding research integrity. Continuous scrutiny can ensure that findings are reliable and beneficial for society. 🔍 #ResearchTransparency 8/ In this preprint, we delve into recent cases where post-publication review played a critical role in correcting the scientific record, offering lessons on how to better navigate this evolving landscape. 🧠 #PostPublicationReview 👉 Read the full preprint here: https://lnkd.in/eDFW5PJi #Science #SocialMedia #PostPublicationReview #OpenAccess #Research
