📆 Today is #RareCancerDay. Although individually these cancer types occur rarely, taken together, rare cancer types account for about 25% of all cancer diagnoses. The lack of data on rare cancers results in slow progress in understanding the biology of these tumours. This contributes to poorer outcomes: the 5-year overall survival rate for rare cancers (~49%) is significantly lower than that for more common cancers (~63%). 📢 Join us in calling for a #Resolution4Rare to improve outcomes for persons living with rare cancers and make sure that #HealthforAll leaves no one behind. New research shows a promising new functional precision medicine approach can help guide more timely, effective #cancer treatments. Approximately 2 million people are diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. each year, according to the National Cancer Institute. Nearly 30 percent (more than 600,000) are expected to die. When #cancer comes back, it’s harder to treat. FIU cancer research Diana Azzam, PhD and FIU Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work researchers combined genetic testing with personalized drug screening on tumor samples to identify the right treatment for children with relapsed cancers. A clinical trial, in collaboration with Nicklaus Children's Health System and support from Live Like Bella® Childhood Cancer Foundation and the State of Florida, showed it delivered faster results and more treatment options. This unique functional precision medicine approach led to 83% of patients showing improvement. NOW ONLINE Special report by World Cancer Research Fund finds links between activity levels and #colorectalcancer survival. Being physically active after diagnosis might improve survival rates. But more research is needed for clearer answers 🔓 OPEN ACCESS ➡️https://lnkd.in/gg5khrCE The roles of physical activity and sedentary behaviour in colorectal cancer prognosis are unclear. Here, as part of CUP Global, the authors performed a systematic review and meta-analysis on the associations of post-diagnosis physical activity and sedentary behaviour with all-cause and cause-specific mortality and recurrence among colorectal cancer survivors. Whilst the evidence was graded as limited, it suggested that a physically active lifestyle and avoidance of sedentary behaviour may be associated with longer overall survival. The study highlights the importance of more consistent and objective exposure assessment in future studies and the need for randomised trials to provide stronger evidence.

Our colleague from Tartu University Hospital, Anni Lepland, presented the Estonian branch’s results from the BRIGHT genetics-based personalised breast cancer screening project at the #ESMO2024 by the ESMO - European Society for Medical Oncology.   🔵 One-fifth of breast cancer cases occur in women under the age of 50. The current problem across Europe is that women younger than 50 are not typically screened for breast cancer. However, women at increased risk should begin screening earlier. Our clinical-grade tests are available for European healthcare, significantly enhancing the assessment of genetic risk for breast cancer. 🔵 The Estonian branch of the BRIGHT consortium introduced a new service model for organising genetic risk-based screening. This model integrates clinical-grade polygenic risk score testing for all women. Those identified as high risk are referred for further screening, tailoring the start and frequency of mammograms based on individual risk. It also offers medical geneticist consultations and single-gene testing for women with a family history of cancer. 🔵 Feedback from both participants and healthcare professionals has been positive. The study also confirmed that women can be involved in personalised breast cancer screening through various channels, including online telemedicine, GP practices, breast clinics, and pharmacies, all of which proved effective.

Despite recent advances in therapies, most patients relapse and face harsh side effects from treatments like chemotherapy and bone marrow transplants. Dr Emily's Cure Cancer project aims to explore AML's biology for new therapies, with the aim to improve patient outcomes by identifying new biological processes that can be targeted during treatment to eliminate AML cells with minimal impact on normal, healthy tissues.
