This is the Kirana store near my house which won't be closed at any means because of Zepto / Blinkit We have been reading all week about the impact of Quick commerce on the closure of 2,00,000 Kirana stores in last one year. But here are the more insights you have to understand ▶️ Metropolitan Areas: 90,000 closures (45% of total closures) ▶️ Tier-1 Cities: 60,000 closures (30% of total closures) India has approximately 13 million kirana stores across the country, with a significant concentration in tier-2 and smaller cities. Specifically, it is estimated that over 10 million of these stores are located in tier-2 cities and smaller towns Ever visited a kirana store in a small town or village? If you stand there for just five minutes, you'll notice something interesting: customers don't ask for 1kg or 5kg packs of items like toor dal. They ask for ₹20 worth of it. That's the secret to why kirana stores thrive, breaking down bulk goods into smaller quantities and selling at a better margin. And the best part? The customer doesn’t even notice the difference. They look for requirement to requirement basis as they earn on daily basis Until people in these towns have more disposable income, this system won't change. In metros, premium convenience is the new normal, but in smaller cities, it's still a distant dream. That's why kirana stores aren’t going anywhere. The study revealed that metro cities, which are home to 17 lakh stores with an average monthly sales figure of Rs 5.5 lakh, account for 45% of these closures. Tier 1 cities follow with 30% of the closures, while Tier 2 and 3 cities account for 25%. Tier 1 cities have about 12 lakh stores, each generating average monthly sales of Rs 3.5 lakh. Indian shopkeepers were well established in East African countries such as Zanzibar (Tanzania),Kenya, Uganda which have a sizable Indian origin populace. Even pop culture stereotyped the average Indian immigrant as a 7 to 11 shopkeeper. Remember "Apu" from The Simpsons? This article on Deccan Herald today puts the spotlight on the #existentialcrisis these local "Kiranas" face due to the onslaught of #eCommerce operators. It is worth pondering over how as responsible citizens we can strike a balance between #comfort and #co-existence. It's the small things that make a large difference. It's not just the neighborhood general stores or Kirana shops that are getting affected because of the invasive #apartment culture in big cities but also the small time hawkers who come to your doorstep. Their goods may cost us a bit more but it's essential to understand that "discounts" often come at a cost (not delving into that territory now). And I'll not be surprised if the Giant Quick Commerce Startups turn their Dark Stores into Pickup Points for Daily Groceries for nearby localities.
