The Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games are “aiming to be a leader in sustainability.” Can they succeed? 100+ athletes have called on multinational companies to prioritize reusable packaging and reduce single-use plastic at sporting events. Here’s the effort announced (without the fluff): · 700 water and soda fountains, glass bottles, and reusable eco-cups · 1 marathon (Marathon Pour Tous) will be a zero-plastics race · Coca-Cola aims to capture and recycle all plastic bottles used at #Paris2024. It's all good news, because any action is better than no action, but can we do better? Or better yet, can big corporations do better? Any ideas? #Sustainability From Robert Little's post (thank you) 👇
Imagine a world where sporting events leave no trace of plastic waste. The Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games are taking a bold step towards this vision, but they need our support to truly make a lasting impact. Over 100 elite athletes, including Paris 2024 hopefuls and world champions, have called on companies like The Coca-Cola Company and PepsiCo to prioritize reusable packaging and reduce single-use plastic at future sporting events. Paris 2024 aims to be a leader in sustainability, serving beverages in reusable packaging at an unprecedented scale. Here's what you need to know: 🟢 The Paris 2024 Games will feature 700 water and soda fountains, returnable glass bottles, and reusable eco-cups, significantly reducing the reliance on single-use plastic. 🟢 A 10% increase in reusable beverage packaging globally by 2030 could eliminate the need for over 1 trillion single-use plastic bottles and cups. 🟢 The "Marathon Pour Tous" at the Paris 2024 Olympics will be a zero-plastics race, eliminating the need for almost 400,000 plastic bottles. 🟢 Coca-Cola aims to capture and recycle all plastic bottles used at the Games, but concerns remain about the continued reliance on single-use plastic. The Paris Games present a golden opportunity to showcase the power of reuse and inspire a global shift towards a more circular economy. Let's champion the efforts of these athletes and push for a future where sustainability is at the heart of every major sporting event. As we've recently seen from the Australian Open, large scale events are now adopting a "single use plastic free" approach. AO 2025 partnered with Sustainability Victoria: - serving up 38,000 reusable cups at this major global tennis event - to avoid 50,000 single-use plastic cups (roughly the equivalent of 400kg) going to waste and encourage #reuse #behaviour. These cups have been supplied by Melbourne-based bettercup.®, and were washed on site by a team from Green My Plate A social enterprise that supplies reusable plates, bowls, cups, mugs, and staff with the goal to eliminate single-use plastics at functions and events. This is just an example of a "#zerowaste #sportingevent" Curious to know about the #environmentalimpact of #sports? As well as to know what we can do ourselves to play an "active" role (pun intended 😉) for a more sustainable fitness routine? Read our latest article in the comments. As we mentioned on Monday, Sustainable Golf Week is taking place between the 11th and 15th November this year, and although the focus is on #golfforcommunities, we are also keen to highlight how #golfers can help make golf a more #sustainablesport. There is now a wide range of sustainable golf wear available, making it easier for golfers to make the switch from traditional golf clothing. Virgin synthetics such as polyester have been a mainstay of golf apparel for decades; yet these materials are made from fossil fuel-based chemicals, that are not biodegradable and shed microplastics with every wash. In our latest guide on women's golf wear, we highlight some of brands that have embraced sustainable materials such as recycled polyester and organic cotton, to make women's golf clothing that's good for the golfer and for the planet. Over 100 sports organizations and elite global athletes have called for Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and Bottler Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) at the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympic Games to curb plastic pollution by significantly increasing access to reusable options. In a letter written by these organizations and athletes, they ask Coca-Cola and Pepsi to make reusable packaging an option for all their customers globally to dramatically increase reusable packaging by 2030. They also call for assurances that future Olympics and other major sporting events will rely on reusable packaging rather than single-use. Additionally, this letter advocates for the inclusion of legally binding targets and other mechanisms to increase reusable packaging in national legislation and in the UN plastic treaty. The 113 signatories include 102 athletes and 11 organizations, representing 43 sports and 30 countries. Over 50 Olympians, Paralympians, World Champions, and World Record Holders signed the letter, including 22 athletes who will be competing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. #PlasticFreeEvents #ParisOlympics #PlasticReduction #Reduce #PlasticPackaging #EndPlasticPollution #ChooseReuse #ReuseRefill #PlasticFree
