U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week (USAAW) is observed each year from November 18-24. Its purpose is to raise awareness of the importance of appropriate antibiotic and antifungal use and the threat antimicrobial resistance poses to people, animals, plants and their shared environment. Everyone has a role in fighting antimicrobial resistance. Working together, through a One Health approach, we must improve the global prescribing and use of antibiotic and antifungal drugs and invest in global infection prevention actions across human health, animal health, plant health and the environment (for example soil and water). Influenza A viruses will change over time. This report out of Colorado with indoor cats being infected with #H5N1 with no known exposure further raises concern about how this virus may be crossing over from different animal reservoirs and/or people. We need more resources to establish the necessary surveillance and prevention strategies to adequately respond to this growing pandemic risk. This isn’t just a US issue. There's an outbreak in Argentina (indeed a few other places around the world, including several European countries) with confirmed cases of psittacosis. There are several people in hospital with severe pneumonia. psittacosis is also known as 'parrot fever', so called because the bacteria responsible for infection is present in parrot faeces. Bit unfair on parrots, especially as cockatiels, ducks and poultry can also be responsible for passing the infection onto humans. There's a lot of uncertainty about the Argentina outbreak, with very little information provided. The World Bank Treasury (IBRD • IDA) . Putting in place GPAI-2 will enhance creditworthiness of World Bank borrowers. The first GPAI was implemented in 2004-2012 with $1.3 billion financing from IBRD/IDA . It reduced #pandemic risk. There was high demand from IDA borrowers for follow-on projects in the horizontal APL. Independent Evaluation Group rated the GPAI projects in Vietnam “Highly Satisfactory” for Development Outcome. The GPAI operationalized #OneHealth approach and systematicallky improved performance of core public-health systems in more than 60 countries. World Bank HNP management unfortunately discontinued the GPAI in 2012 (ahead of the 2020 closing date, formally approved by the MD ). This premature “neglect” contributed to the millions of excess deaths and trillions of economic costs in LMICs in 2020-2023. And to added debt burdens. The news of a HPAI -infected man in Texas (see link below) should serve as a reminder of this significantly underestimated risk to global financial and economic stability.
