Today we were joined at Victoria University of Wellington by accomplished international leaders and experts in gender equality, Dr. Natalia Kanem and Helen Clark to discuss ‘What’s next for sexual and reproductive health rights’. The conversation focussed on how far we’ve come on sexual and reproductive rights since the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo 30 years ago, why progress is slowing, how this can be overcome, and the role New Zealand can play. 'Reproductive health and gender equality are the pillars of sustainable development. Although we've come far since The International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo 30 years ago we need to keep forging ahead. The statistics today still show that every two minutes a woman dies during childbirth and 30% of women have been subjected to physical and/or sexual violence. 🗣 We join other civil society organizations in urging #EU leaders to prioritize the involvement of the people most affected by EU policies and legislation on #equality and non-#discrimination. We call on EU leaders to actively consider the needs and challenges of marginalized groups such as the #Roma when developing and implementing relevant laws and policies. The European Union is built on principles of equality and non-discrimination, but too many continue to face multiple forms of discrimination daily. As EU leaders set their priorities for 2024-2029, we call on them to make equality and non-discrimination central to their agenda, and to: 📌 Maintain and empower the Commissioner for Equality and establish a Directorate-General for Justice and Equality. 📌 Strengthen and expand existing equality strategies. 📌 Support and preserve the European Parliament’s Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality. 📌 Create a dedicated Council body for equality. 📌 Ensure robust funding for civil society organizations working on equality. The journey towards gender equity is as diverse as the people striving for it. In Nigeria, urban women face workplace equality and political representation issues, while rural women prioritize access to education and healthcare. A one-size-fits-all approach to feminism is not effective to address unique needs. Across Europe, women's experiences vary widely. Western Europe focuses on corporate leadership and political representation, while Eastern Europe combats domestic violence and economic disparities. Globally, the feminist movement must respect the diverse experiences women face. From reproductive rights in the U.S. to basic education in Africa and Asia, embracing diverse feminisms allows us to tackle these challenges effectively. #GenderEquity #Feminism #Diversity #InclusiveLeadership #GlobalFeminism #Europe #Nigeria

Some women accept abuse as a form of wife discipline, which affects their autonomy. Our new manuscript sheds light on a critical link between women's attitudes towards wife abuse and their reproductive autonomy in Southern Africa. Analyzing data from over 17,000 women across eight countries, we found that opposing wife abuse significantly boosts a woman's autonomy in making reproductive choices. Our findings highlight the importance of shifting societal attitudes to foster gender equality, sexual and reproductive health. On this International Women's Day, it's crucial to recognize that gender equality and democracy go hand in hand. The International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) has found that assaults on women's rights, including access to abortion, are also assaults on democracy. Sadly, we are witnessing a tremendous backsliding in both areas, particularly in the USA. World Population Day, celebrated every year on July 11, is meant to raise awareness of global population issues like family planning, gender equality, poverty, and human rights. According to the United Nations, the global population surpassed eight billion on November 15, 2022.  United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres says, "Reaching a global population of eight billion is a numerical landmark, but our focus must always be on people. In the world we strive to build, 8 billion people mean 8 billion opportunities to live dignified and fulfilled lives." RWI Synthetics believes we must empower everyone to make informed decisions contributing to sustainable development. In a world of 8 billion, there must always be space for possibility.
