Code allows us to use the corner to corner dimensions of a square foundation, which is 1.4x bigger than its width. This means a 4’ square foundation calcs at 5.6’ instead of 4’. This allows for a shallower foundation. Most first time designers spend a lot of energy trying to reduce concrete, but for moderate sized projects the concrete truck is rarely full anyway so the extra concrete is much cheaper than forming or deeper foundations. I always recommend 4’ square foundations, they just seem to end up cheaper in the long run in my experience.
