Congratulations to GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. for earning a PDCA Project of the Year Award in the Associate/Engineering Affiliate category! The Back Cove West Storage Conduit project surpassed the conventional scope of buried pipe installations by using an innovative driven sheet piling support of excavation to overcome complex challenges – difficult site conditions, sensitive marine clay and custom-built equipment – with ingenuity and expertise. The project: a pre-cast concrete storage conduit providing a storage capacity of approximately 2.25 million gallons. Sargent was awarded the work and retained GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. to provide engineering support during construction. In the initial project phases, Sargent worked closely with Wright-Pierce to value engineer the storage conduit design. Departing from the original plan, which entailed a linear trench excavation spanning 3,800 feet for a single box conduit, Sargent proposed an alternative approach: employing a 1,700-foot-long double box conduit configuration with identical storage volume. This strategic revision not only halved the length of the excavation and significantly reduced the volume rock to be excavated, but also yielded substantial cost savings of approximately $1 million while expediting the project timeline. To address unique excavation requirements, Sargent enlisted the expertise of GZA to devise a tailored support of excavation (SOE) design. GZA and Sargent evaluated SOE options. The project specifications presented a range of potential support systems including driven sheet piles, drilled soldier piles and lagging, and trench boxes, provided they adhered to best practice standards. Prohibitive drilling expenses and apprehensions regarding groundwater infiltration eliminated drilled soldier piles and lagging as an effective solution. Although the off-the-shelf trench boxes were a viable option, operational constraints arose in accommodating the gantry crane. Hence, the selection of driven sheet piles and internal bracing was deemed the most advantageous and cost-effective SOE system. Driven sheet piles offered several notable benefits, including ready availability, easy installation and, crucially, the ability to be removed and reused. 💡 Exciting developments at AEDES as we spotlight one of our most recent projects, a #pipeline design and #engineering partnership with an esteemed client in the energy industry. From the beginning, our team was tasked with an intricate challenge—addressing an exposed pipeline that weaves through Jacobs Creek, under historical structures that support NJ SR29 and the Delaware/Raritan Canal, and finally into the Delaware River...   Following a detailed evaluation, our client selected a relocation strategy that our engineering and design team meticulously crafted, covering preliminary and final engineering designs. This innovative relocation involves a 14-inch HDD (Horizontal Directional Drilling) crossing, stretching approximately 2,475 feet in length include both horizontal and vertical curves. AEDES coordinated and obtained 20 civil, environmental permits and regulatory approvals. The scrutiny of this crossing was intensified as it was upriver of the Trenton and Philadelphia water intakes.   The complexity of the operation was heightened by the HDD entry and exit points being located within private residential and historically significant properties in PA and NJ, respectively. AGI is proud to present another design-build ground improvement project, Project Piper, carried out to support the tilt-up construction of an 855,000-square-foot warehouse structure in Troutdale, Oregon. As part of this project AGI designed and installed over 4,000 Deep Soil Mixing (DSM) columns up to 70 feet deep! The site presented several geotechnical challenges: ❌ Weak Soils: The subsurface consisted of artificial fill, soft silts and clays, and loose, liquefiable sands. These conditions could not adequately support the warehouse foundation and floor slab loads. ❌ Liquefaction Risk: The loose sands posed a significant risk of liquefaction during seismic events, potentially causing settlement and structural damage. ❌ Fast-Track Schedule: The project demanded a fast-track construction timeline, requiring efficiencies from all parties. AGI's solution offered several advantages for Project Piper: ✔️ Improved Bearing Capacity: The DSM columns significantly enhanced the soil's bearing capacity, allowing it to support the heavy loads. ✔️ Uniform Slab Support: The columns provided uniform support and increased subgrade modulus for the floor slab, limiting the differential settlement. ✔️ Reduced Static & Liquefaction Settlements: The DSM columns limited both static and liquefaction settlements. ✔️ Fast-Track Execution: AGI supplied increased resources, crews, and worked double shifts over 4 months to achieve the milestone deadlines for the client.
