DE ZWARTE HOND AT INNENBANDSTADT-EXPO IN WUPPERTAL. We were commissioned by the city of Stadt Wuppertal to develop a holistic strategy for their city centre. The goal was to not only focus on the Barmen and Elberfeld centres, but to also assess the urban space potential between them and create a unified future vision. From 24 to 29 June, the Wuppertal city council hosts the InnenBandStadt-Expo, which is part of the ‘Sustainable inner cities and centres’ programme by the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building of the North Rhine-Westphalia state. This event provides an overall impression of the numerous ongoing project modules further contributes to innovative city centre development. Together with other planning offices, we will present some initial design ideas to the public on 24 June as part of an idea factory, discussing them afterwards. Wuppertal's city centre main characteristic is its ribbon-like structure as a valley axis, which creates good conditions for the 15 or 5-minute city. The project aims to strengthen this spatial strip of Wuppertal's city centre. We look forward to an inspiring exchange with all those present. The Knowlton School is pleased to announce that Fernanda Loyola Cardoso has been awarded the inaugural Director’s Travel Prize for her proposal “Singapore: Architectural and Urban Contradictions in Addressing the Critical Zone.” Loyola Cardoso—an undergraduate architecture student with a city and regional planning minor—will travel to Singapore during summer 2024 to research that city’s Gardens by the Bay and other sites. --- from Loyola Cardoso’s research proposal Singapore, a global leader in innovative and sustainable architecture, portrays its green infrastructure in the Gardens by the Bay region as strategies that actively tackle its Critical Zone. Despite these notions, the architectural and urban phenomena present in Gardens by the Bay have infused practices of greenwashing, portraying an unrealistic image of sustainability (Schneider-Mayerson, 2017). The intended research aims to capture the unsustainable architectural and urban contradictions practiced in Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay to further understand the environmental outputs at stake in the Anthropocene. --- Read more https://bit.ly/48hgz0n
