Our paper based on my graduation research is out, you can find it using the following link: https://lnkd.in/e6g5Csty In our paper, Human-centric computational urban design: optimizing high-density urban areas to enhance human subjective well-being, we demonstrate a complete proces to incorporate the perception of humans in computational urban design. After having worked for almost two years in practice, I am even more convinced that computational urban design is a very powerfull and easy to use supportive tool in the exploration phase of urban densification initiatives. Exploring locations fast and identitying the volumetric potential can help us with solving the housing shortage that many urban areas are having right now. However, as demonstrated in the paper, exploring methods to make it more comprehensive is important to increase its potential. After all, how valuable is a design that is not generated to align to the perception of its (generally) only users: humans? Generative Design and Predictive Urbanism 3/7 Real-time Predictive Urbanism: Designing Cities for the Future, Today What if we could predict the future needs of our cities with data? Welcome to Predictive Urbanism, where urban planners use historical data, AI, and machine learning to create cities that don’t just solve today’s problems—they anticipate tomorrow’s challenges. Using tools like ArcGIS Pro and CityEngine, we can analyze trends in population growth, migration patterns, and even climate change to forecast future urban needs. For example, say a city is expected to grow by 20% over the next decade. Predictive urbanism helps planners simulate various growth scenarios—where will the population likely settle? How will this impact traffic, housing, and public services? By running these simulations, we can make data-driven decisions on how to expand infrastructure and optimize space. A real-world application of predictive urbanism is the response to sea-level rise in coastal cities. Planners can use GIS data to predict how rising waters will affect neighborhoods, then develop strategies for flood protection, such as relocating critical infrastructure or redesigning drainage systems. This proactive approach saves cities from costly retrofitting or emergency responses down the line. Predictive urbanism is a powerful tool for forward-thinking city design. As I embark on the final leg of my Master of Architecture thesis journey, I want to share the progress with all of you! 🏙️ Delving deep into the intricate web of urban dynamics, my thesis focuses on dissecting various components under land use - from lush green spaces to bustling commercial areas, efficient transport networks to essential amenities. Each element plays a crucial role in shaping our urban landscapes and influencing the quality of life for inhabitants. 💡 But here's where it gets even more fascinating! I'm employing a cutting-edge approach by creating agents based on real-world demographics. These agents are infused with unique needs and preferences tailored to each land use component. Cities publishes a new paper by Junjie Luo, Pengyuan Liu, Wenhui Xu, Tianhong Zhao, and Filip Biljecki that integrates human visual perceptions into urban digital twins. The research proposes a pathway for built environment characteristics evaluation and perception that combines objective feature analysis with subjective perceptions based on an urban digital twin that was designed and developed as part of the project. The idea of an urban digital twin is to replicate the real-world and test scenarios before they are built, driving their implementation in the real-world, which this project has accomplished by integrating an automated means to human perception simulation in a digital model with high fidelity, informing design and policies. During my Junior year of High School, many many moons ago, I participated in the Science Fair. My topic was “Fractals - The Geometry of Nature”. By mimicking the patterns found in nature, these wings can improve aerodynamics, making flights more fuel-efficient and eco-friendly. But the influence of fractals doesn't stop there! In urban development, architects and city planners are also embracing fractal principles to create sustainable and visually stunning designs. I had the honor of presenting our work, 'Dual-stage Flows-based Generative Modeling for Traceable Urban Planning,' at #SIAM #SDM24 in Houston, Texas. I extend my gratitude to all my co-authors, Wei Fan, Dongjie Wang, Pengyang Wang, Yong Li, and Yanjie Fu, for their contributions. Automated urban planning aims to design feasible land-use configurations for target areas automatically. This work investigates stable automated urban planning and the complex relationship between urban functional zones and configurations. We propose a unique dual-stage flows-based framework to first design rough sketches of the target areas (i.e., urban functional zones) and then generate detailed planning (i.e., land-use configurations). Our study demonstrates that a hierarchical design can capture the relationship between different levels of urban planning, and normalizing flows can enhance interpretability and stability. 4th extract from 📖 Designing Transdisciplinarity in Urban Research : 'Speech professionals and visual specialists in the urban project', by Sarah Van Hollebeke (p.60) : "While a plurality of intelligence and different worlds of meaning are invited, the communication space seems to be organised at the initiative of one of these worlds, which fixes the rules of the game. Indeed, the proposed exercise is largely framed by visual modes of expression and is inspired by workshops and project-based research that is specific to the world of architecture and urban planning. This scene also gives us a glimpse of the ‘asymmetries of grasp’ (Chateauraynaud, 2015) between researchers, due to the ability to master visualisation tools to represent urban reality. In this situation, those who do not manage to use these preferred modes of expression feel less legitimate to intervene and fear being disqualified, mocked or scorned. In my opinion, this scene reveals the ease with which some people set the tempo and the difficulty the others have following it. It shows us the ease of the former in manipulating maps, tracings or projecting a desired situation and the hesitation, even embarrassment, of the latter in taking part in this exercise to achieve a collective description of a site."
