If you think you won’t feel this common misconception as an entry level data analyst, think again. As an entry level data analyst, you must feel you not completely prepared to start applying for data analyst role. It is just a common misconception. Here's the thing: it's perfectly normal to feel uncertain. One of the best ways to overcome this is by starting to build a portfolio. Creating projects not only gives you insight into what a data analyst does day-to-day, but it also helps you understand the major aspects of the job. It's never too early to start gaining hands-on experience. As you dive into these projects, you'll identify areas where you lack knowledge. This is important because it directs your learning and helps ensure you're making progress toward your goals. You may never feel 100% ready and that's fine! You don't need to meet all the requirements listed in a job description. If you meet about 50% of them, you're in a solid position to apply. How can I get a data analyst job with no experience? Your best option is to get an internship somewhere you want to work and convert that into an offer. That assumes you have the skills from school or self-study but no work experience. Many schools also have work-study programs and real world projects where students are placed with a company that gives them a problem to work on. If you're in the process of reviewing school options, you might favor one that has such well-established programs in place. Look for faculty that have good relationships with companies with which they have run past projects. You can also enter sponsored hackathons and case competitions. Basically, you're looking for opportunities to showcase your skills to people in a position to hire or recommend you. You should also work on the demand side of the equation. Publish content that showcases projects you've worked on. Don't have a project? Make one up and find public data to use. Then show others how to perform that analysis. Share a github repo. You'll not only increase your odds of getting a job once you're in the interview process. You'll draw demand from employers looking for your skills. #internships #dataanalystjobs

“How can I get a data analyst job if I don’t have any experience?” This is a question I get a lot, so let’s talk about it. First, EVERY DATA ANALYST had to start from zero at some point. Every single one of us. Nobody is born with experience. And if you’re going for an entry-level position that pays an entry-level salary, most of the people you’re competing with have never worked as a data analyst. However, just because you don’t have job experience doesn’t mean you don’t have experience. If you’ve taken courses to learn the skills, practiced those skills, built good projects, and worked to become the best data analyst you can be, that is valuable analytical experience. If you have experience working in a specific job sector (finance, ecommerce, healthcare, etc.), that is valuable industry experience. Focus on leveraging the analytical experience you get from learning with projects, and leveraging whatever work experience you have by highlighting transferable skills and industry knowledge. Let me stress: as you’re trying to get your first job as a data analyst, you’re not competing with people who have years of experience as a data analyst. Those analysts are applying for higher-level, higher-paying jobs. You got this. Happy Monday!

[ Ep2 : So, What Exactly Did You Do as a Data Analyst? ] During my 4.5 years as a data analyst across two companies, what did I achieve? Did I contribute something valuable to the company? These questions starkly challenge me. (No, I did a lot, really!) It’s not easy to showcase significant projects in a data analyst's career because most tasks involve answering straightforward questions posed by others using data. Reflecting on this, most projects worthy of my resume were initiatives I personally took on. This implies that the projects I included in my resume represent the values I aspire to. So, what kind of projects did I undertake as a data analyst, and why did I decide to pursue them? Reflecting on the 'Data Analyst Resume' I compiled during my tenure, let’s break it down one by one. A. Data Utilization for Everyone, by Everyone, for Everyone [Introduction of Amplitude & Data Taxonomy Renewal] As mentioned in a previous article, I believe the closer the physical, temporal, and structural distance between analysis and execution, the better. As a data analyst, I thought our ultimate goal should be to empower everyone in the company to analyze data independently without needing a data analyst. For this, I believed the following were essential: Easily understandable data formats and names for everyone Tools that anyone can use to query and analyze data, along with the necessary training Experiences of successfully utilizing data to enhance services With this mindset, in my final year at my first company, I took the initiative to implement Amplitude, a software that facilitates data analysis for everyone, and decided to renew the existing data taxonomy (naming and formatting of user activity data), which had become too complex for everyone to understand. The accomplishment was creating an environment where hiring additional data analysts became unnecessary, but the challenge was the slow progress of the project due to my inexperience in leading such an initiative. Moreover, interviewing PMs about their data utilization styles and thoughts could have led to a more effective project outcome. Indeed, for any project to succeed, understanding what the target audience finds inconvenient and desires is crucial. B. Structural Understanding Emerges from Excellent Metrics [Designing Service Metrics & Creating a Metrics Data Mart] Many look at Silicon Valley cases or companies like Toss and conclude that experimentation is key to service success, continuously improving metrics through these experiments. You don't have to be a data analyst to be great at working with complex datasets. Data analysts don't have to stay data analysts. Analysts can pivot to all sorts of other great roles. Here are just a few: 1. Data Engineer 2. Data Scientist 3. Data Advocate 4. Data Architect 5. Data Strategist For many, becoming a data analyst is a "stepping stone" role on the way to another. These roles often pay more too. You don't have to stay as an analyst... ...if you don't want to. Today is my day 19 of looking for a data analyst job and YOU should create this type of portfolio projects First of all, WHY are you creating a portfolio project? To show your data skills and expertise to recruiters/managers, right? Your portfolio is like a BRIDGE between you and your dream job Do you think creating projects on toys/coffee/pizza datasets would impact your bridge? Obviously YES! These dummy projects are like a cargo ship that will COLLAPSE your Baltimore bridge STOP using them for your portfolio right now They are good to train your skills and make you aware of data tools But NOT good for your next job Create such projects that hook the hiring manager But how can YOU do that? Your job won't be to analyze the toys or coffee datasets Your job would be to analyze real-life datasets to solve real-life business problems And here we discovered the potential GAP You can fill this gap by creating industry specific projects Are you interested in working in the Sales Domain? Create projects that show churn analysis, customer segmentation, customer lifetime value analysis etc Are you interested in working in the Finance Domain?
