You will gain deeper knowledge of Supreme Court cases addressing Asian American students that preceded the 2023 SCOTUS decision on affirmative action; learn the complex history of Asian American students’ inclusion in admissions and enrollment within institutions of higher education in the United States; and hear diverse perspectives from Asian American constituencies, via cited research and interviews, on decisions to support, or not support, the Students for Fair Admissions cases. Note: This presentation does not “take a side” in terms of whether it was "right" or "wrong" for Asian American students to join Students for Fair Admissions, but rather aims to answer the question of “why?”

A university faithful to its mission will provide enduring challenges to social values, policies, practices, and institutions. By design and by effect, it is the institution which creates discontent with the existing social arrangements and proposes new ones. In brief, a good university, like Socrates, will be upsetting.” "The neutrality of the university as an institution arises then not from a lack of courage nor out of indifference and insensitivity. It arises out of respect for free inquiry and the obligation to cherish a diversity of viewpoints. And this neutrality as an institution has its complement in the fullest freedom for its faculty and students as individuals to participate in political action and social protest. No one gets to opt out of the public good. It isn’t just state funded or state subsidized colleges and universities that have serious and direct obligations to the public good. Read this paper to understand that with some depth and specificity.

One of our teachers wrote a book! 🖊️ Have you ever found school dull? Not in our Global Politics course! And the students in there are extra lucky, as their teacher Chiel Mooij has written the book they're studying! Chiel explains: “The subject of Global Politics encompasses peace, conflicts, human rights, globalization, development and more. Within the classroom, it takes the form of a conversation rather than a lecture, exploring what each topic means for different students. Every individual brings a unique perspective, and each perspective is valued. Ultimately, this diversity enriches the course!” 🌏🌎 These experiences are used in his book, drawn directly from the students' contributions. NIRF rankings released 2 days ago! But the issue of inaccurate calculation of regional diversity still seem to persist. In 2021, I wrote an op-ed to"evoke scholarly scepticism about the accuracy of regional diversity, as calculated by the NIRF".
