When you're applying for a job, should you send a cover letter (or cover email)? Absolutely YES, every time, unless they specifically tell you not to. Your cover letter should do two things: a) introduce you to the recruiter or hiring manager, and b) make them WANT to read your CV/resume. Keep it short, because they are busy and don't want to read a long letter or email. So just: 1. tell them WHY you are writing to them, e.g. "I'm applying for the position of . . . " 2. Tell them WHO you are, e.g. "I'm a wellsite geologist with 15 years of offshore experience in both deep and shallow waters." 3. Tell them (indirectly) WHAT you offer, e.g. "Please see my three major achievements in the career highlights section of my attached CV/resume." Note: don't list the achievements in the cover letter itself; instead, make them LOOK at your CV/resume! 4. Tell them how excited you will be to hear back from them, e.g. "I would love to hear from you if you think I am a good fit for this position, or any other position, in your company." That last part is very important, if, for example, they have already filled the position you are applying for. It means they may consider you for other roles in their company, and that's great! That's it. Keep your cover letter short! They may have two hundred of them to read, and they will appreciate your concise, to the point, and very professional cover letter.
