What 20 years of directing taught me about 📚 (What) Poetry is.... ... what language does when it wants us to pay attention. Poetry.... Is every time you use a metaphor to explain yourself, or when your choice of words expresses something beyond the literal. It’s when you make up a new word! ... or a new expression, because it better expresses what you mean. It’s when the sounds or the rhythm of what you say conveys as much as the words. We all use it all the time. Language is a poor companion to our thoughts… poetry is our attempt to work against that fact. What do we do when we want to close down meaning and interpretation? When we want to close down the action or the agency of others…? We strip our language of poetry… I did it myself this morning: 👚 "yes you do need to wear a jumper… because it’s cold. Please put it on". 🫠 We use simple, clear language when we want only one outcome… when we micro-manage, when we are scared of what might happen if we lose control of meaning, and the actions it generates. But when we want to inspire a range of potential outcomes, when we want to engender agency and confidence and perhaps even to inspire… that is when we use poetry. (Rhetoric is what poetry does when it wants to achieve something specific quickly... but that's for another day) Sometimes standing in front of a group of people, language is all you have. But when used well, it has incredible power. And when you use it well, when you stir people, when you activate others and yourself… that’s poetry. #Poetry #Language #Directing #Creative #Copy #Communication #Inspiration

“Poetry not only has the power to transport us into history and enrich us with incredible tales of ancient civilizations, it’s also an incredible tool for understanding those around us and most importantly for understanding oneself. In addition to understanding the importance of expression, poetry increases our writing skills. Through poetry we learn about structure, and how to allow our words to get carried away by the artistic flow. Reading poetry strengthens our understanding and analysis, while helping us to empathize and identify feelings the writer describes, giving us alternative ways to perceive everyday things, and broadening our perspectives. One of the most important and beneficial things when writing poetry is the encounter with oneself, the opportunity to heal through words, to understand a myriad of emotions that are camouflaged within us.” #poetry #reading #writing #healing https://lnkd.in/gEeGdZ3h

🌊 The Freedom of Expression: The Beauty of Free Verse Poetry 🌊 In a world where we often find ourselves confined by rules and expectations, free verse poetry stands as a powerful testament to the liberating nature of creative expression. Unlike traditional forms that impose strict structures and rhymes, free verse invites poets to break free from these constraints, allowing for a more authentic and fluid exploration of thoughts and emotions. Free verse poetry embodies freedom—not only in its form but also in its ability to capture the complexity of human experience. It enables us to embrace the nuances of our feelings, the depth of our observations, and the intricacies of our narratives without the pressure to conform to a predetermined rhythm or pattern. This liberation fosters a raw honesty in our writing that resonates deeply with readers. When I write in free verse, I feel empowered to experiment with language, imagery, and pacing. Each line becomes an opportunity to convey meaning in a way that feels true to my voice, unencumbered by traditional constraints. This freedom has enriched my creative journey and provided a safe space to explore my innermost thoughts. I encourage fellow writers and creatives to embrace the spirit of free verse in their work. Whether you’re an established poet or just starting your writing journey, consider the beauty that comes from breaking the mold. 🌟 What has your experience with creative freedom been like? How has free verse poetry allowed you to express yourself more authentically? I’d love to hear your thoughts and stories in the comments below!

"Expressing Emotions Through Verses" ✓ Poetry is another form of Writing! Poetry actually is a form of literary expression that uses rhythmic and often metaphorical language to express emotions, convey ideas, and create a clear image in the head of it's readers. ✓ Poetry writing involves crafting verses that capture the essence of feelings, thoughts, and experiences. ✓ In poetry, you'd see certain writing structure like a free verse, sonnets, etc. to actually deliver a message. ✓ And in addition, poets employ literary devices like rhyme, and symbolism to enhance the emotional impact and aesthetic appeal of their work. ✓ Unlike prose, poetry can break grammatical conventions, creating a rhythmic and musical quality that resonates with readers. ✓ Its versatility means it can address a wide range of themes, from love and nature to social issues and personal reflections. #PoetryWriting #CreativePoetry #LiteraryExpression #VersesAndRhymes #PoeticForms #EmotionalPoetry #SymbolismInPoetry #WritersOfLinkedIn #PoeticDevices #Ogwrites
