Preparation is Key: The Cinematographer's Journey As a seasoned cinematographer and editor in the South African TV industry, I’ve come to appreciate the meticulous preparation required before stepping onto a set. Being intentional in your approach to filming can make all the difference in the final product. Here’s a glimpse into how I prepare to ensure every project I work on is a success. Scouting Locations Before any shoot, understanding the location is crucial. I spend time visiting the set, observing the natural light, and noting any potential challenges. This helps in planning the shots and ensuring the lighting equipment is used effectively. Storyboarding and Shot Lists Collaborating with directors, I create detailed storyboards and shot lists. This not only ensures that we capture all necessary angles but also helps in maintaining a coherent visual narrative. Every shot is planned with intention, contributing to the overall story. Equipment Check Ensuring all equipment is in perfect working order is non-negotiable. From cameras and lenses to lighting and sound gear, everything is checked, packed, and double-checked. This prevents any technical issues that could disrupt the shoot. Lighting Plan Lighting sets the mood and tone of a scene. I develop a comprehensive lighting plan that aligns with the director's vision and the story’s needs. This involves deciding on the type and placement of lights, as well as considering the natural lighting conditions of the location. Rehearsals Rehearsals are a key part of the preparation. They allow me to test the camera angles, lighting, and movements. It’s during these rehearsals that adjustments can be made to ensure everything flows smoothly during the actual shoot. Mindset and Focus Preparation also involves getting into the right mindset. A clear focus on the project’s goals, understanding the narrative, and being ready to adapt to any changes on set are essential. This mental preparation helps in making quick, informed decisions during the shoot. If you had asked me years ago what it meant to be a cinematographer, I would have probably talked about cameras, lighting, and framing the perfect shot. But now, after years of working in this field, I’ve realised that cinematography is about so much more than just the technical aspects. For me, it has been a window into different worlds—literally and figuratively. Through the lens, I’ve had the privilege to capture diverse stories, meet people from all walks of life, and experience the beauty of different cultures and environments. Every project has been a new lesson, not just in filmmaking, but in life. One of the biggest things I’ve learned is how important it is to understand people. Whether it’s working with a brand to bring their vision to life, or collaborating with a team of creatives, communication and empathy are at the core of every project. This field has taught me to listen more closely, observe the little details, and appreciate the nuances of every story—because it’s often the small moments that make the biggest impact. It has also challenged my perspective on creativity. It’s not always about having the fanciest equipment or the most complex setup. Sometimes, the best stories are told with simplicity and heart. Learning to work with what you have and finding beauty in unexpected places has been a game-changer for me, both professionally and personally. Looking back, I realise how much my work has shaped the way I see the world. Understanding shot composition is crucial for conveying the intended mood, meaning, and storytelling aspects of a scene. Lighting Setup: Lighting plays a crucial role in cinematography as it sets the mood, highlights important elements, and creates depth within the frame. Cinematographers need to understand different lighting techniques such as key light, fill light, and backlight, as well as how to manipulate light sources to achieve desired effects. Familiarity with lighting equipment and setups will enable effective communication with the director and other crew members to achieve the desired visual aesthetic. Camera Movement: Camera movement refers to the motion of the camera during a shot. This can include techniques such as panning (horizontal movement), tilting (vertical movement), tracking (following a subject's movement), crane shots, dolly shots, and handheld camera work. Each type of camera movement conveys a different feeling or effect and can be used to enhance the storytelling or emotional impact of a scene. Understanding camera movement allows cinematographers to collaborate effectively with directors in visualizing and executing their creative vision. My Thoughts Event videography is much more than just recording with a camera. I disagree with the belief that it isn't as creative as commercials and films. If we are talking about a camera operator filming an event there will be some random shots of people in it eating,chatting,hosting. But a Cinematographer carefully plans each and every shot to match the events mood. The Cameras, Dolly & Cranes serve as physical tools of cinematography, but to convey the visual language effectively, one must utilize conceptual tools. There are several conceptual elements, but to generalize, we include: - Frame - Light and Color - Movement 🖼️ Frame: Comprising various compositions, the frame highlights what the filmmaker intends to convey to the audience. For instance, in Frame below from the film "Punch-Drunk Love, filmed by Robert Elswit where we can see character's loneliness and isolation using color and distorted walls. The negative space on the right suggests an impending event, speaking volumes about the character's world without uttering a word. 💡Light and Color: Lighting and Color are paramount in cinematography, as they can evoke emotional responses from viewers. In the provided photo, the dull, top-down lighting signifies the character's challenging situation, as he feels scrutinized. The blue blazer symbolizes the character's calm and stability amidst adversity. 🚶♂️Movement: Camera movement plays a crucial role in illustrating a character's power. For instance, if the camera were to slowly move towards the character at a low angle in the same shot, it would depict the character as powerful and in control, despite their isolation. Filmmaking is more than just capturing images—it's about telling stories that deeply resonate with audiences. Understanding the subtle language of visuals is key in this dynamic field.
