Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG 12) aims to ensure responsible consumption and production patterns by promoting resource efficiency, reducing waste, and encouraging sustainable practices across various sectors. It focuses on minimizing environmental impacts, enhancing economic growth, and fostering social equity. Key initiatives include reducing food waste, promoting sustainable business practices, and improving waste management systems. By achieving these targets, SDG 12 seeks to balance economic development with ecological sustainability, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable future for all. World Food Day, observed on October 16, highlights the importance of global food security and the need for sustainable food systems. Established by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 1979, this day aims to raise awareness about hunger, promote efforts to eradicate poverty, and encourage initiatives that enhance food production and access. It serves as a reminder of the vital role that food plays in health, nutrition, and the economy, urging individuals, communities, and governments to work together towards a more equitable and sustainable food future for all. #worldfoodday #sustainablegoals #foodforall #foodtechnology

Today, on World Food Day, we acknowledge a crucial paradox: while farmers worldwide produce enough food to feed the global population, millions still face hunger daily. The challenge is not just about food production—it is about access, distribution, and sustainable management. Addressing this requires a comprehensive approach rooted in sustainability. Reducing food waste, strengthening responsible supply chains, and supporting sustainable farming practices are key. Approximately one-third of the food produced globally is lost or wasted, which undermines both food security and environmental sustainability. By focusing on sustainable solutions, we can ensure that food reaches those who need it, while also protecting our planet’s resources. This means minimizing waste, improving distribution systems, and supporting ethical, environmentally friendly agricultural practices. Together, let’s champion the Right to Food, reduce waste, and build responsible food systems for a Better Life today and a Better Future for generations to come. 🌱 #WorldFoodDay #RightToFood #Sustainability #FoodSecurity #ReduceWaste #ResponsibleSupplyChains

Building resilient #foodsystems goes hand in hand with growing our food sustainably, but there’s more to it. Consumers have the power of the choice. They can choose how they want their food to be produced, including emission-free packaging, decarbonizing the food value chain, and one of the most important choices: food waste 🗑️. Nearly 60 million tons of food is wasted every year in the U.S. In fact, food is the single largest component taking up space inside U.S landfills - an approximate value of nearly $218 billion. The Fast Company shared an article that highlights how our #foodchoices impact the world’s soil, water, and biodiversity💚. Read more in the article below.

We Can Serve a Sustainable Plate Without Breaking the Bank Climate change and unsustainable practices threaten our ability to produce enough nutritious food while protecting the environment. Industrial Agriculture's dependence on #chemicalinputs pollutes water sources, jeopardizing the very freshwater supplies crucial for agriculture. #Foodwaste adds insult to injury, with a staggering third of all food globally lost or wasted annually. Feeding a ballooning global population by 2050 therefore demands a radical shift. Luckily, communities and businesses across the globe are already cultivating #sustainability. Urban farms are providing fresh produce to underserved neighborhoods, and innovative companies are pioneering #regenerativeagriculture for soil health and biodiversity #restoration. #SustainableFoodSystems (SFS) transform our food systems from a source of strain to a wellspring of sustainability. #SFS is holistic, requiring a collective effort from all stakeholders: Policymakers should implement policies that incentivize #sustainablefarming practices, curb food waste, and promote #healthyeating habits. Businesses must invest in eco-friendly technologies and practices throughout the food chain. Consumers should make informed choices about the food they buy and minimize waste at home. Transitioning to SFS won't be a walk in the park. Consumer habits are hard to break, and economic disparities can limit access to healthy food options. However, we can employ workable techniques like: 🍒 Embracing Sustainable Agriculture practices like #croprotation, cover cropping, and water-saving irrigation to build #soilhealth and reduce reliance on chemical inputs. ♻ Minimizing Food Waste by upgrading infrastructure, improving logistics, and adopting #smarterconsumerhabits like meal planning and #composting to reduce waste. 🍽 Shifting Dietary Patterns can significantly lower #emissions. Public awareness campaigns and investment in affordable, #proteinalternatives can support this shift. 🤝 Strengthening #LocalFoodSystems by buying locally produced food reduces transportation emissions and fosters stronger connections between producers and consumers. #foodsecurity #sustainablefarming #sustainableeating This and more climate and sustainability insight in today's Sunday Nation's pullout, the #ClimateAction https://lnkd.in/drjU2whd

On October 16th, we celebrate World Food Day, a global call to address food insecurity and create sustainable food systems that protect both people and the planet. This year’s theme, "Water is life, water is food. Leave no one behind," highlights the critical connection between water, agriculture, and environmental sustainability. As the global population grows and climate change intensifies, the strain on our natural resources has become more pronounced. Agriculture, which relies heavily on water and land, is both a contributor to environmental degradation and a key sector for driving sustainability. Unsustainable farming practices can lead to soil depletion, water scarcity, and biodiversity loss, threatening the future of food security. But there is hope. By adopting environmentally friendly practices—such as sustainable water management, regenerative agriculture, and reducing food waste—we can grow food more efficiently while minimizing our ecological footprint. These practices not only preserve ecosystems but also increase resilience to climate change, ensuring future generations have access to nutritious food. This World Food Day, let’s remember that protecting the environment is essential for feeding the world. Investing in sustainable solutions benefits both the earth and the communities that depend on it. Let’s work together to create food systems that are resilient, equitable, and in harmony with nature. 🌱🌾 hashtag #WorldFoodDay hashtag #Sustainability hashtag #ZeroHunger hashtag #ProtectOurPlanet

🍎 Today is the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, designated by the United Nations General Assembly. Food loss and waste (FLW) is a major contributor to climate change. Globally, food systems are responsible for around 26% of anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, 90% of deforestation worldwide, and the majority of biodiversity loss. Nearly one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted, meaning that the resources expended in its production (e.g., water, land, energy, labor) are likewise wasted. FLW also exacerbates issues like food insecurity. Reducing FLW is key to mitigating climate change and global hunger, which is why Verra is prioritizing methodologies that drive these efforts forward. In 2023, Verra released VM0046 Methodology for Reducing Food Loss and Waste. VM0046 enables projects that tackle FLW at various stages in the food supply chain to quantify the downstream emission reductions from their activities. The methodology helps those projects generate carbon credits, and the finance from selling these credits enables projects to sustain and scale up their activities. Additionally, Verra is currently developing a methodology for sustainable food systems, which will quantify upstream emissions from reduced FLW across the food supply chain. This draft methodology will be open for public consultation later this year. 💡 Learn more about VM0046 Methodology for Reducing Food Loss and Waste, v1.0: https://bit.ly/3tbIQXA 💡 Learn more about the draft methodology for sustainable food systems: https://bit.ly/4eDDG92 #Verra #Food Loss #FoodWaste #FLW #FoodSystems #CarbonMarkets
