The Techno-Humanist Manifesto, Chapter 3: Ode to Man A hallmark of the techno-humanist worldview is love for humanity, including reverence for human creations. A species with such a capacity for science and art, for inventiveness and creativity, for planning and building, for love and compassion, profoundly deserves to live, to thrive, and to expand to the planets and the stars.

The rules that govern the lives of animals or the closest relatives to humans, the primates are no different than those that govern humanity. Like animals, humans constantly compete with each other, competition to breed, eat and for shelter. Humans cannot survive without a tribe. So, morality exists to govern the behaviour of the members within the tribe in hopes that the tribe does not destroy itself. Empathy exists in humans to ensure the survival of offspring. But now, all these tribes live close together. So, humans must find a way to see humanity as one tribe, not as a collection of tribes. Human survival depends upon this. If humans don't find a way to cooperate to extend empathy to humanity, then each one will be the axe that chops its roots and becomes the arbiter of humanity's extinction. Do individual preferences give rise to competitiveness? Can humans transform from individual preferences to collective concerns? Can humans transform from competitiveness to cooperation to save humanity? #letsexplore

I share these profound thoughts of Nicholas Smith. I agree wholeheartedly. I think the notion that we can or have to save the earth and humanity is false. The root of this idea is to be found in materialism - self interest. The message of doom motivates people to spend fortunes on organisations who promote their so-called solutions. These people are even rewarded with prizes and great public profiles, all promoting their own financial welfare. The extinction of a species presents no threat to to nature. The disappearance of a planet makes no difference to the universe. One day all of us will become sustenance for plant and animal life. Can't we simply care for the fauna and the flora because of what they are: Living beings unsurpassed in their beauty and gifts to us. We don't need a message of doom and a deadly diagnosis to appreciate other life forms. The masses of humanity are not concerned with the future of the planet and never will be. Live in the moment and experience the wonder of life, all forms of life. Develop your sense of ethics and aesthetics, hug a tree, live in a state of wonder. We don't need the Gores and the Thunbergs. Something to consider in the days that follow: Humanity is described as the collective existence of human beings as a species. But more importantly it’s also the quality of being compassionate, understanding, and kind toward others. Humanity encompasses the traits and values that define human connection, empathy, and the shared experience of living. It includes an emphasis on striving toward moral and ethical responsibility for ourselves and others. Remain vigilant. Humanity unravels when ignorance, greed, fear, indifference, and division replace empathy, compassion, and our shared responsibility to care for one another. And humanity is beautifully imperfect—capable of compassion yet prone to mistakes, constantly striving for progress while sometimes stumbling into harm along the way. And still, humanity encompasses forgiveness, as it calls us to recognize shared imperfections so we may let go of resentments, and heal through understanding and compassion. In essence, humanity reflects both the compassionate attributes we aspire to and the flawed collective journey we will suffer in our search for achieving the best of us.
