🌍✨ International Day of Persons with Disabilities ✨🌍 Today, we celebrate the incredible contributions and unique perspectives of persons with disabilities. Let’s also take a moment to reflect on how we can continue to foster an inclusive world through our language and mindset. 🧠💬 Using People-First Language is a powerful way to shift our thinking and respect the dignity of individuals. It’s not “the disabled person” – it’s “the person with a disability.” 👥 Every individual is first and foremost a person, with hopes, talents, and dreams, not defined by their disability. Let’s challenge ourselves to: 🔑 See ability, not disability. 🧠 Embrace mindset change – it’s about inclusion, not just accommodation. 💬 Use language that reflects respect and humanizes all people. Together, we can make a difference by creating spaces where everyone is valued and empowered. 🌟 #IDPD #PeopleFirstLanguage #InclusionMatters #DisabilityAwareness #MindsetChange #Respect #Empowerment #Inclusion #DiversityAndInclusion #TheSOSAgency

Yesterday was 3rd December. It was the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 🧑🦽. Known by this name, this day is only 17 years old. Twenty years ago the 3rd December would have been called the International Day of Disabled People 🦽🧑. In 2007 the UN changed the official name of the day to fall in line with the language of the UNCRPD, which had been adopted the year prior. If this day was observed in New Zealand only, chances are it would still be called a day for Disabled People. Because here in New Zealand - at least for now - we have embraced identity-first language. This is a move towards disability pride, and a reflection of the social model of disability. Regardless of whether you use identity-first or person-first language, of far greater importance is our collective action to realise the theme of the day. To amplify the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future. That's our kind of future. Is it yours? #IDPWD, #Ourkindoffuture, #Volition Image Description: Logo for International Day of Persons with Disabilities

INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES Today, we commemorate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This day serves as a reminder of the need to promote inclusivity, accessibility, and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities. As we celebrate this day, let's focus on the well-being and empowerment of children with disabilities, and work towards creating a society that values and supports their growth. We must also acknowledge the unique challenges faced by women with disabilities, including gender-based violence, and advocate for their rights and protection. Furthermore, we call for increased employment opportunities and reasonable accommodation in workplaces and public spaces to enable persons with disabilities to participate fully.
