BUSINESS & SOCIETY-PART 3 Ethics and Stakeholder Management Seventh Edition Archie B. Carroll University of Georgia Ann K. Buchholtz University of Georgia Business & Society: Ethics and Stakeholder Management, Seventh Edition, employs a stakeholder management framework that emphasizes business’s social and ethical responsibilities to external and internal stakeholder groups. A managerial perspective is embedded within the book’s dual themes of business ethics and stakeholder management. The ethics dimension is central because it has become increasingly clear that ethical or moral considerations are woven into the fabric of the public issues that organizations face. Economic and legal issues are inevitably present, too. However, these aspects are treated more directly in other business administration courses. The stakeholder management perspective is essential because it requires managers to (1) identify the various groups or individuals who have stakes in the firm or its actions, decisions, and practices, and (2) incorporate those stakeholders’ concerns into the firm’s strategic plans and daily operations. Stakeholder management is an approach that increases the likelihood that decision makers will integrate ethical wisdom with management wisdom in all that they do.

**It’s All About Ethics: A Reflection on Real Estate Leadership and Integrity** Professor Chris MacDonald and I are attending the leadership retreat organized by the Real Estate Institute of Canada (REIC) | Institut canadien de l'immeuble (ICI) at a serene Niagara-on-the-Lake resort. The central theme of the retreat is ethics in real estate. Professor MacDonald, a renowned philosopher specializing in business ethics, delivered a compelling address, illustrated with simulations, underscoring how ethics intersects with decisions we make every day at work and beyond. In December 2022, Stephen Moranis and I highlighted in the The Financial Post the significance of ethical behaviour in real estate, prompted by a critical report from the Auditor General of Ontario examining the Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO), the regulator overseeing real estate activities in the province. We wrote: “The AGO report said the Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO), the agency responsible for regulating the provincial industry, is not fulfilling its mandate to protect consumers’ interests. 'The activities RECO performs ... are not always effective and timely,' it concluded.” You can read the full article [here](https://lnkd.in/gKnwZznH). It is hardly surprising that the real estate industry, represented by organizations such as the Real Estate Institute of Canada and the Ontario Real Estate Association are making significant strides in educating their members about the necessity for higher ethical standards in the real estate business. These industry-led initiatives, which emphasize self-imposed higher ethical standards, are likely to yield more transparent and efficient real estate outcomes than those imposed by top-down regulations. The commitment to ethics showcased at this retreat reaffirms the profession's dedication to fostering a culture of integrity, ultimately benefiting consumers and enhancing the industry's credibility. LEADERSHIP, ETHICS, AND OUR SHARED SECURITY: A MOMENT FOR REFLECTION Recent news has shed light on a troubling issue: the admission by President Lopez Obrador of his efforts to influence judiciary decisions through coordination with former Supreme Court Chief Justice Arturo Zaldivar. This revelation strikes at the heart of what we hold dear - the rule of law and the balance of power that keeps governance fair and just. What does this mean for us in the broader sense? It’s a vivid reminder of the critical role ethics plays in leadership. When the lines between branches of government blur, it doesn’t just threaten the integrity of our legal system; it shakes the foundation of trust and security across all sectors, public and private. The backlash from legal experts, academics, and the Mexican Bar Association underscores the broader implications: a call for transparency, integrity, and the strict separation of powers to maintain the confidence and security of our institutions. This situation invites us to reflect on the importance of ethical leadership. It’s an opportunity for all leaders to reaffirm their commitment to principles that safeguard our institutions against the misuse of power. Let’s take this moment to champion the values of fairness, integrity, and accountability. Our collective security and trust depend on it.
