The election of Mayors across Victoria represents a significant milestone in our local democracy. Victorian Mayors stand as leaders of their local communities — representing their voices, fostering collaboration, and driving innovation where it matters most. On 12–13 December 2024, the MAV is thrilled to welcome more than 120 Mayors and Deputy Mayors to Melbourne for the MAV Mayoral Mandatory Training Program. This 2-day event is an opportunity for local leaders to complete their regulated training while honing the essential leadership and governance skills needed to excel in their roles. This training will also mark the start of the new Mayors Institute, a high-impact program that empowers Victorian Mayors with the skills to navigate challenges and lead with confidence and impact. This is more than just training; it’s the start of a transformative journey in leadership for Victorian communities. We can’t wait to see our Mayors and Deputy Mayors there!

Thanks to Robin for sharing this- I’m not actually sure I agree with this MP’s as leaders line tbh. At the moment the citizens of the 6 th Largest Economy in the world are in a quagmire of despair on a range of issue across a range of sectors young to old. “ Lions led by Donkeys” Alan Clarke’s brilliant title for his book on WWI springs to mind. Brexit promised “ taking back control” … it’s down to voters and remaining citizens to step up to the plate and remind our politicians both national and local and the civil servants who advise them that they are not our political masters but our servants. Frankly I don’t think said politicians and bureaucrats are really very good: we have / had no real opposition because of 1st past the post majorities and the last thing I want to listen to are “ good managers” smooth talking on mainstream and social media. Now giving UK’s 136,000 young 16-24 old homeless a chance to set up in business through Crisis Changing Lives scheme which Gresham Benevolent Fund is raising monies towards backed by “ An Apprentice’s Guide to Good Management “ is a completely different kettle of fish which I could wholeheartedly support. If Anne you’d like to add your name to the petition on pushing for a National Strategy on Youth Homelessness that would be great. FYI there was a debate on this subject in the HoC at the end of May 2024. Just before the General Election. The first time the issue had been debated in 40 years because it was signed by a petition of 10,000. As I say there are 130,000 young homeless ( up from 85000 in 2019). How many MP’s of all parties turned up to the debate out of 650 :- 6!! The other 646 needed to read more than a guide to good management imv.

I had the pleasure of attending a Board training at Gordon Institute of Business Science, University of Pretoria, under Dr. Francois Laurens. The training emphasized the critical role of a Board in providing strategic leadership for long-term organizational success. Key takeaways included: 1. Your Board's main responsibility is to set a strategic direction aligned with the organization's core purpose and desired outcomes, while also envisioning potential futures and promoting sustainable practices (outcome-based leadership). 2. A significant portion (about two-thirds) of factors influencing the organization lie outside the Board's control, such as technology, climate change, and unforeseen events. Board members should be well-informed about these risks and develop mitigation strategies (risk-based leadership). 3. Effective Board leadership should foster an ethical culture, improve performance, ensure robust control mechanisms, and maintain societal legitimacy. Overall, the training highlighted that Board leadership is a significant responsibility that requires diligent exercise of fiduciary duty.
