This weekend just past, a long weekend for Victorians, I had the pleasure of participating in an annual tennis tournament in Euroa. A tournament predominantly played on grass courts, including the transformed courts on a cricket oval next to the beautiful permanent grass courts at the club. This transformation enables to club to host a larger tournament and give more people the fabulous experience of playing on grass (which really is a devine experience for tennis players and much nicer on your body when you're playing multiple matches over 3 days!). 700 players, over 1300 games played + the spectators and young kids who sit on the side lines to cheer on the games, eat, drink and create the atmosphere. In an incredible yearly feat, the volunteers at the Euroa Tennis Club host a sensational weekend of tennis which is inclusive of all levels of tennis and is a great experience for all ages. This year the temperature was intense but the volunteers still managed to deliver an awesome event. It is true testament to what the right culture and setting up the right processes and systems can do to get great outcomes. Sadly since the pandemic volunteering levels have noticeably decreased in Australia. If you are an organisation that has a volunteer arm or is struggling to get the volunteer culture right, I can assist you. As consultants that work across private, non profit and government organisations, Quality Service Improvement is experienced in reviewing volunteer activity and setting you up for success. Having the right set up and attitude to volunteer activity in your org is vital to have successful outcomes and can lengthen the tenure of volunteers. Here’s a fantastic article from Fox Sports about our most recent Homeless World Cup campaign in Seoul. It’s great to see their interest and the effort they’ve put into producing such a comprehensive piece that reaches their followers and readers. This coverage is invaluable, not only for creating awareness about the The Big Issue Australia's Community Street Soccer Program and the Homeless World Cup but, more importantly, for shining a light on homelessness and disadvantage—and the power of football as a vehicle for #socialimpact. Here’s a personal reflection on the impact of the Homeless World Cup and the honour of representing Australia: “When you wear the green and gold, and you overcome the challenges they have, I think it gives them a huge boost and a level of resilience they can use for the rest of their lives.” I’ve always found that football fans and followers deeply connect with initiatives like ours. Through their love of the sport, they appreciate the connections and benefits it fosters, and, most importantly, they see football as a special global language they can relate to. This year, in particular, has brought outstanding media coverage, including Netflix’s Beautiful Game movie, 60 Minutes on Nine, and many other features driven by the efforts of the Big Issue's marketing team. The inspiring stories of the players at the Homeless World Cup have motivated many people to contribute locally as volunteers, while others have stepped up on corporate and philanthropic levels. Exciting times especially with expansion of the local program on the cards and the potential of hosting the Homeless World Cup again in Australia. Those who get involved often find the experience to be life-changing for themselves and their organizations, companies and employees. #football #CorporateSocialResponsibility #SportForDevelopment #sponsorship #Leadership #Speaker FIFA

A recent report painted a shocking picture for the rates in which violence & serious incidents occur in Australian junior community sport. Despite the terrific people working in this space, and those following the lead of Sport Integrity Australia, more clearly needs to be done to address these alarming statistics. Who would have thought that collectively holding our breaths, and clenching our knuckles could bring us closer together? Watching England vs Spain a few weeks ago in the final of the Euros with my daughter and seeing her disappointment when the final whistle blew took me back to my first football match. As you might imagine it was at Old Trafford. I was 10 years old, and saw the mighty Reds Devils draw 0-0 against Torpedo Moscow in the UEFA Cup. Despite a lacklustre result, the feeling was incomparable. But it wasn’t just the excitement of the game or the atmosphere. Being in those stands and cheering on the team alongside thousands creates a real sense of unity. In these moments, regardless of who you are, there is a sense that we were all in it together. Fast forward to 2024, and I am long-standing Manchester United season ticket holder with my friend Ryan Pereira. Sport has a unique gift that allows us to find that all important common ground regardless of our background. And this ability should never be underestimated. Yet with all its power to bring about connection, we sadly know that the beautiful game has on several occasions fallen short of creating an entirely inclusive and unifying atmosphere for all. This is just one of the reasons why it’s an honour to be involved with the Premier League Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Standard (PLEDIS), which is committed to guiding clubs towards enhanced inclusivity and community outreach. Attending multiple panels with my PLEDIS colleagues has offered valuable insights into the community involvement and efforts of football clubs. Many are actively promoting inclusivity within stadiums, actively combating issues like racism and homophobic chants, whilst also battling online hate. The panels are starting up again during preseason, and I’m looking forward to seeing the progress that continues to be made. You know the line all too well - we still have a long way to go. Yet, I truly believe that we are taking important steps towards ensuring that everyone who walks into a stadium can experience the connection that team sports can bring.
