If you’d have told me 5 years ago that I’d be co-founder of a VC-backed tech company - I would have laughed at you. 🥲 I haven’t had a linear path by any stretch. And it’s something I used to feel insecure about. It’s looked like this: writing books in fashion history teaching at British universities on fashion history & theory assistant fashion curator at a museum Then switching 360° to a… marketing & PR assistant in publishing brand & partnerships coordinator head of Brand Communications GM of Audience Engagement founder of a boutique sales & marketing agency And building Norby meant a totally new chapter. → Beyond my comfort zone again → Absorbing new ideas → Learning A LOT The main thing I’ve learned is: I can do anything, learn anything and be anything I want to be. And so can you. My insecurity has now transformed into pride and respect for my unique journey. Especially because all the dots join in the end. I’ll be showing up more here - talking about the journey of building Norby, sharing my story and encouraging more people to make radical changes, do what feels right, and pursue avenues they believe they’re not qualified for or that feel too “out of the norm”.

12 years ago Claire Alexander and I started Firecracker Events & Marketing from my home office in Rosebank, Cape Town. Today we have beautiful offices in Bree St, a growing team and clients across 5 continents. We still have plenty to achieve and every day is a school day, but here are some of things I've learnt along the way: 1. Create your own opportunities: Waiting around for the perfect moment? Not going to happen. Back in 2011 when I'd had my first baby, there weren't many flexible corporate marketing roles available and the thought of leaving my baby all day was heart breaking. When I crossed paths with Claire we saw an opportunity to create a dynamic, integrated marketing and events agency - Firecracker was born. 2. Get comfortable with saying No: In a world buzzing with opportunities, it's easy to get carried away and say yes to everything and everyone. But saying no is arguably even more important. It's about being selective, focusing on what will deliver the best return, and staying true to our vision and values. We protect our peace and mental health above all else. 3. Choose your partners wisely: This is the biggest decision you will make. When you're in the trenches building a business together there needs to be a solid foundation of trust, alignment of core values and work ethic. Being able to have a good laugh together has also been the antidote to many a stressful situation. 4. Be obsessively curious: We never rest on our laurels. There is always something to learn, improvements to make, to be more effective, more agile, more creative, more innovative - the list never ends. Seek brilliant people you can learn from. 5. Back yourself: it can get a little hairy out there - stick to your True North and trust yourself your abilities to get you through it. Things tend to go pear-shaped when I second guess myself. To illustrate point 3, here is a pic of Claire and I at a suppliers rave party. Taking ourselves very seriously, as always...
