"good design lead to a good economy" Ariella Masboungi. The Bilbao Effect is a term used by economists to describe the economic and social impact of the Guggenheim Museum. The museum was built in 1997 and is one of the world's most visited museums.Before its completion, Bilbao was a city with high levels of unemployment and poverty.But after building the $100 Million Guggenheim Museum, things changed drastically for this Spanish town.

Here’s the latest rankings of the top 20 most visited museums in Europe. With the Louvre and Vatican continuing to take the top 2 places, it’s brilliant to see the ongoing success of the UK museum sector- with 7 out of the top 20, and 3 of the top 6 in London alone. Hugely thriving, internationally renowned, and all the data still says that culture is the top draw to London for international visitors. Also particularly noteworthy is Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum- with the greatest individual yearly increase, a huge 53.1%. While this ranking is based on physical footfall, it would be particularly interesting to see new metrics emerge that also focus on wider engagement and impact, including digital and outreach. The world we live in is a hybrid one.

Will the new virtual museums eventually emulate the globalisation trend in physical museums?

We recently had the opportunity to work with the Muzeum Prahy on an innovative project aimed at enhancing their Prague of Charles IV – The Medieval Town exhibition. As the team behind the visitor behavior analytics, we provided key insights that helped the museum reshape the experience and bring history to life in a whole new way! 🏛️💡 Here’s what the Museum of Prague achieved using our data: 🔍 Analyzed Visitor Flow: By gathering insights on how visitors moved through the space and what caught their attention, the museum gained a deeper understanding of visitor preferences. 🎥 Boosted Multimedia Content: The museum strategically increased the presence of interactive screens and videomapping, turning them into standout features. 📦 Optimized Displays: Fewer but more focused exhibits now allow visitors to enjoy a clearer, less crowded experience. ✍️ Simplified Text Panels: Long descriptions were replaced with concise, engaging text to improve readability and enjoyment. I finally gathered my thoughts to write about Manifesta 15 in Barcelona, also known as the traveling European Biennial. Established in the 1990s as a response to the new social, political, and economic realities after the Cold War, this year’s theme was Balancing Conflicts, Cure and Care, and Imagining Futures. It’s challenging to provide a deep analysis as I only managed to visit one of the many venues. While one was located in Barcelona itself, the others were scattered across the region, making them difficult to reach, especially for someone visiting only for the weekend. That said, I do appreciate the initiative—I’m all for cultural decentralization. I visited the abandoned The Three Chimneys, a monumental space (like the prison and other industrial or urban venues used for the project) that leaves one reflecting. Spaces of such grandeur inherently make any art showcased within them feel significant. Much of the discussion centered around urban transformation, pollution, and gentrification in the region. For more thoughtful critiques, I recommend reading e-flux or ArtReview. An interesting side note: during the last weekend of Manifesta, when everyone seemed to arrive for the final stretch, the Loop video art fair was also happening in Barcelona (featuring Fragment and Nika Project), and it was packed. Hopefully, this translated into strong sales for the participating galleries and artists. The next Manifesta will take place in Germany’s Ruhr Area in 2026. Let’s see how the industrial narrative evolves in a new context.
