As we commemorate Cybersecurity Awareness Month, it is imperative to underscore the critical role that African nations must play in bolstering their regional cybersecurity standing. In a world increasingly interconnected and reliant on digital technology, safeguarding our cyberspace is paramount to our socio-economic development and regional security. Additionally, the African Union's Agenda 2063, a blueprint for the continent's development, emphasizes the importance of building a knowledge-based economy and fostering innovation. Cybersecurity is a fundamental pillar of this vision. By investing in robust cybersecurity infrastructure and developing a skilled workforce, African nations can create a conducive environment for businesses and entrepreneurs to thrive. It is important to note that a strong cybersecurity posture is essential for protecting critical infrastructure, such as power grids, transportation systems, and financial institutions. Cyberattacks can have devastating consequences, leading to disruptions in essential services, economic losses, and even political instability. By working together, African nations can share best practices, intelligence, and resources to mitigate cyber threats and ensure the resilience of their economies. The spirit of ubuntu extends to the fifth domain - cyberspace. The field of cybersecurity offers a wealth of opportunities for women, particularly those seeking flexible work arrangements. Many cybersecurity roles can be performed remotely, making it an ideal profession for young women starting families. However, there remains a significant gender gap in the industry due to limited access to training and education. To address the skills shortage in cybersecurity, it is essential to inspire young people to pursue careers in this field. There are numerous online resources and free courses available that can provide a solid foundation in cybersecurity and emerging technology concepts, that can be accessed by a simple web search. By investing in cybersecurity, African nations can protect their digital sovereignty, promote economic growth, and enhance regional security. Let us unite in our efforts to build a more resilient and prosperous Africa. #CybersecurityAwarenessMonth #AfricanUnity #DigitalSovereignty #WomenInTech #CybersecurityTraining #AUAgenda63 #CybersecurityLawyer #WTM

Our Senior Manager for Grants and Programmes Strategy, Adeboye Adegoke will be speaking at the #UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) today in New York, USA. His intervention will be at the capacity-building session on the Global Digital Compact for the Women in Cyber Fellows which is part of a broader training programme for the group taking place from February 29 to March 01, 2024. The #GlobalDigitalCompact (GDC), it is worth noting, is a UN-led process intended to create a long-term, human rights-respecting framework of principles for digital governance. The said framework will cover issues such as digital connectivity, serve to avoid internet fragmentation, and promote a trustworthy Internet. #digitalgovernance #digitalrights

I've authored this article: Digital freedom is pivotal for Pakistan’s participation in the global digital economy. While efforts like the National Cyber Security Policy 2021 and Digital Pakistan Initiative show progress, comprehensive reforms and stakeholder engagement are imperative. As global benchmarks illustrate, embracing digital freedom can spur innovation, attract investment, and drive sustainable growth, empowering Pakistan to compete on the world stage.

The youth population in Africa is significant, constituting a substantial portion of the continent's overall demographic profile. They represent the energetic foundation of the continent. Africa can achieve a massive demographic dividend if the youth are engaged through training in technology and digitalization. Closing the education gap and preparing society for a digital transformation will enable the continent to harness the benefits of emerging technologies. Africa must invest in training programs that equip individuals with the behaviors and cognitive skills necessary to participate in an advanced economy and succeed in the rapidly digitized world. Yesterday, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the #EastAfricaIGF2024, organized by Internet Society Uganda Chapter , where diverse voices—parliamentarians, policymakers, civil society, and tech experts—gathered to discuss the future of internet governance in East Africa. Under the theme "Building Our Multistakeholder Digital Future for East Africa," we explored the role of collaboration in addressing critical issues like data privacy, cybersecurity, and equitable digital access. One of the key takeaways was the urgent need for policy frameworks that not only protect digital rights but also encourage innovation. The focus on inclusion, especially ensuring vulnerable groups aren't left behind in the digital revolution, was at the core of every conversation. As we continue to work toward an inclusive, secure, and forward-thinking digital ecosystem, it’s inspiring to see the level of commitment from all stakeholders to shaping East Africa's digital future. Thanks to Internet Society Uganda Chapter for organizing such an impactful event! #EAIGF2024 #InternetGovernance #DigitalInclusion #CyberSecurity #EastAfrica #ISOCUganda Internet Society Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa (CIPESA) National Information Technology Authority-Uganda ICT Association of Uganda

On September 1st, we celebrated International Women in Cyber Day, a special day dedicated to recognizing and encouraging the incredible women making strides in the cybersecurity industry. As we honor those paving the way, it's also a call to action for more women to join this dynamic field—not just as professionals but also as investors and entrepreneurs. To all the women and girls out there: be inspired by those who are succeeding in cybersecurity. Do not be discouraged by the challenges you may face; instead, let them fuel your drive. Organizations like Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) / WiCyS Nigeria Affiliate provide excellent opportunities to connect with like-minded women, build supportive networks, and gain invaluable resources. Mentorship is a powerful tool on your journey. Seek out the right mentors, and don't hesitate to become a mentor yourself—sharing your experiences can light the way for others. Remember, while you're working hard, be mindful of burnout. Prioritize self-care and set healthy boundaries to maintain a sustainable balance. Let’s continue to break barriers, innovate, and inspire the next generation of women in cybersecurity. Together, we can make the industry stronger, more diverse, and inclusive. https://lnkd.in/gU4dQUBe "#China is assisting Africa's digital transition through the construction of #digitalinfrastructure, provision of services and talent training, aiming to ensure that #Africa does not miss out on valuable development opportunities." Much to be said for such cooperation; it is not clear it is as rich or as bad as many paint it to be; and host countries need to be wary of the "fine print" as well as the need to build secure digital infrastructure. #FDi #contracting #criticalinfrastructure #datacenters #technologytransfer #knowledgetransfer #digitalsilkroad #consumerprivacy #cybersecurity #datasecurity #dataprivacy #telecommunication #economicdevleopment #securitization #digitalinfiltration #debttrap #ColdWarthinking
