It’s easy to find media reports about the negative impacts of #crop #farming. A new episode of Foodpod Denmark takes another angle – the potential solutions. Three experts talk about the challenges that are driving their research, the benefits of #AI and the development of new practical tools for farmers. I hope you enjoy it!
🌎Can farmers grow the food we need without stressing the planet? Foodpod Denmark returns with a new episode that focuses on the efforts to minimise #greenhousegas emissions from the soil and prevent #nutrientrunoff into fragile waterways 🌱🐟 We’ve talked to three experts who are building new knowledge and digital tools for #sustainable #agriculture. From the food science department at Aarhus University, Ivan Paponov explains the dilemma of nitrogen use in the field and his team’s work to understand the processes that enable plants to absorb nitrogen efficiently. Philipp Trenel from Danish Technological Institute introduces the #SmartField initiative, a five-year project that aims to build a lighthouse for understanding and controlling nitrous oxide – a greenhouse gas 300 times more potent than #CO2. Mette Kramer Langgaard from SEGES Innovation describes the field trials and satellite data behind the latest digital tools for farmers and a new age of traceability in primary production. Lots of exciting ideas shared at this year’s Sustainable Agriculture Summit. I had the privilege of hosting a breakout session about the “Research Pipeline for Profitable, Climate-Smart Food Systems.” Key takeaways include the need for: 1) more field data that are accessible to researchers for calibrating greenhouse gas and soil carbon models; 2) quantifying uncertainty in models to better value agricultural carbon credits; 3) exploring new modeling techniques including the use of AI. Big shout out to Eric Coronel from Field to Market: The Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture, William Salas from Regrow Ag, Travis Breihan from Ecosystem Services Market Consortium (ESMC), and Vipin Kumar from AI-CLIMATE Institute for their insights.

As part of today's Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development meeting, Commissioner Christophe Hansen is invited to exchange on the vision for the future of agriculture. As Vice Mayor of Milan and Deputy Mayor of Leuven and Eurocities Shadow Commissioners for Sustainable Food Systems wrote in an opinion piece last autumn: "Urban areas house over 75% of Europe’s population and are on the frontline of food system innovation." They also urged then newly appointed Commissioner Hansen to recognise the importance of cities in shaping sustainable food systems. Read the full opinion 👉 https://lnkd.in/eGys5X3Q
