There's an article in the Telegraph today about how the hospitality industry has a shortage of 100,000 staff ... eek! New date from the ONS said this accounts for around 10% of all UK vacancies... double eek! MARRIOTT 6th HUNGER STRIKE: Day 457 “So hotels [and brands] are making plenty of money..." says Gwen Mills, Unite leader. You bet they are. Marriott even boasts about it “Our members want to be able to earn enough to live where they work,” Mills said... “There’s two aspects to this. When you eliminate the daily housekeeping, that means that some rooms that used to be cleaned every day are now dirtier and harder to clean on average within the same allotted time as before — creating a heavier workload in a way. The second thing is the expectations of what guests can get for their money aren’t being met.” With low wages for more work, and escalating room rates, both employees and guests are being scammed “Hospitality is fundamentally about people caring for guests,” Mills said. “So investment in hospitality workers seems to the union like a fundamental investment in their business, in their business model, in their guest experience. … My question to hotel group CEOs would be, ‘Why not work with the union to improve the quality of your employee’s experience and thereby make a better service for your guests?'” Mills' makes an error here in that hospitality is no longer the business model. It's all solely about profit and growth. Marriott's customers are no longer the guests, but the hotel owners. Along with the management companies and the institutional investors, they're totally creaming off the hospitality pie.
