💬 "𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙛 𝙖 𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙚 𝙗𝙧𝙪𝙨𝙝𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙠𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙?" Art has a profound ability to raise awareness, evoke empathy, and inspire action. From paintings and sculptures to digital media and performances, artists around the globe are using their creativity to shed light on the plight of trafficking victims and advocate for their freedom and rights. 🖼️ The visual accompanying this post is a mural created during the International Anti-Human Trafficking Conclave in Siliguri, featuring Sangeeta, a trafficking survivor, symbolizing resilience and hope. Underneath the beauty lies a tragic reality: this area is a hub for human trafficking in South Asia. Tens of thousands are taken from their communities each year, sold into slavery, forced marriages, or labor by international crime rings. Combatting this crisis requires the dedication of NGOs, law enforcement, governments, and the international community. On this World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, let's harness the transformative power of art to combat this grave injustice. Support art therapy for survivors, attend exhibitions, and share artworks that inspire change. 💗 #myCulture #WorldDayAgainstTraffickingInPersons #ArtForChange #EndTrafficking #HumanRights #CreativeResistance #FreedomThroughArt

“Partly because of the lockdown, things were suddenly more visible. It was like a veil was lifted. There was a heightening of cases of domestic violence, for instance, which we knew about but had to deal with. We know about power structures, but I wondered what I could do to help... Art, at a certain point, felt pointless, but I did begin to wonder what role I wanted to play. What service do I want to provide the world?” As part of "In Grief, In Solidarity," artist-activists Ikroop Sandhu, Isma Gul Hasan, and Hit Man Gurung discussed the various contexts in which their visual and performance-based, artistic practices evolved with their activism in India, Pakistan, and Nepal, respectively. Working as part of collective communities and in solidarity with movements was formative for each of them. With editor Kartika Budhwar, they also discussed the “moments” (or lack thereof) that made them turn to art, and how they feel about the institutional and other problematic aspects of the rarefied art world. At the core of the discussion was an ambivalence about the centrality of visual and performance art to activism, but also the idea that art does indeed have a specific power that other ways of engaging with the world don't. I have two reactions to this. First, it seems completely plausible given all the other things we have seen happening in Gaza. There seems to be no control, no limits to what the #IDF will do to #Palestinians. This is just another step on their #genocidal path. Second, this is utterly horrendous, inhuman and disgusting! How can this be happening? Are we sure it is happening? How can we check these information sources? Why is nobody preventing #Israel from doing such things?! I don't know how to reconcile these two reactions. They make me feel sick inside, and powerless to stop or even understand what is going on in #Palestine.
Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor have published a brief claiming Israeli tanks have deliberately run over dozens of Palestinian civilians alive. I'm sure many of you have seen the disturbing image/photo published online of the remains of a young Palestinian man after he was run over by an Israeli tank. This tactic is straight out of the Nazi playbook. In 1944, in the commune of Authie located in the Calvados department of Normandy, Hitler youth fanatics of the 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend murdered some of their Canadian PoWs using this method of running over them with tanks in the middle of the village square. The whole concept is deeply disturbing, an act that can only be committed by those lacking humanity, or a soul. Source: https://lnkd.in/eS_UDdR3

Thank you to Global Voices for publishing an op-ed I authored to bring attention to Iran's continued persecution of political prisoners after their release. 💡 The piece highlights that the work bans and mobility restrictions imposed on political prisoners after their release by the Islamic Republic of Iran are illegitimate punitive measures that allow the regime to censor and exert control over dissidents for several years. 🔉 It is important that the international community recognizes these harmful measures as part of the full spectrum of repressive tactics employed by the regime against Iranian dissidents and human rights defenders - including activists, artists, journalists, lawyers, and others - and that it includes them in its advocacy. #humanrights #humanrightsdefenders #iran

When you humanize someone and feel empathy and connection and you see shared values, dreams and vision and that we are all sharing the same earth trying our best to get through the day and triumph in our lives, it's harder for Allport's scale to ever escalate from Antilocution, avoidance into discrimination hate, physical attack and genocide... What we are seeing now is dehumanization and genocide....https://lnkd.in/dtWxav7A

ACMI — Story of the Moving Image: Blak Women on Screen 👉🏽 👉🏽 👉🏽 For over 50 years, Blak women have been using film and television to tell their stories, challenging the narratives imposed by white Australia. From the mission days when Aboriginal women used the English language forced upon them to advocate for their rights, to now leading the charge in the screen industry, Blak women have been pivotal in creating authentic representations on-screen. Historically, Indigenous women were misrepresented, as seen in the 1955 film "Jedda", but today, Blak women are reclaiming their voices, providing characters that reflect their true identities and dismantling racist and patriarchal stereotypes. These powerful voices in Australian cinema and television boldly declare that Aboriginal women have not only survived but are now thriving. By flipping the script, they are transforming how stories are told and understood, not just within their communities but across the entire nation. Blak women are leading the way, ensuring that their stories are told with authenticity and control, moving beyond survival to envisioning a future where they and their communities can truly thrive.
