Autumn is a crucial time for #reforestation efforts, offering a brief window for planting. During this period, lasting just a few weeks, seedlings enter dormancy as temperatures cool and daylight hours decrease. This dormant state allows trees to be transplanted with minimal stress. At the same time, the ground in our reforestation areas, which range from 1700m to 2200m atlitude, starts freezing earlier than in lower areas, and it becomes impossible to plant sometimes in mid-November already, leaving us only around 15-20 days to plant the open-root seedlings.

Before planting, think about the mature size of the tree you’re selecting. Many trees have roots, trunks, and canopies that grow much larger than expected. Make sure you have enough space to accommodate these growth patterns. #TreePlanting #TreeTips #PlantingTrees

Sowing quality seeds is the first step towards a successful onion harvest. This is how to start. -Choose the right onion seeds for your climate and desired harvest time. -Sow the seeds in well-draining, loose soil that has been amended with compost or manure. Aim for shallow planting, about ¼ inch deep, and keep the soil moist until germination. With proper care, your onion seeds should germinate within 7 to 10 days . #LetsGrowTogether

Performing a vertical mulching with compost on this Silver maple tree experiencing some tip dieback in the crown! This is done to target the tree's roots and minimize leaching the nutrients to the grass. First, determining hole placement. We spray painted a radial pattern away from the trunk of the tree with the holes approximately 3 to 5 feet apart up to the drip line of the tree's crown. Next, we prepared our towable air compressor, set it to 90 PSI, and began air spading! Each hole was excavated approximately 8 - 18 inches deep. An air excavation device, like the Air Spade, is preferred over a shovel because it significantly reduces the chance of damaging the tree's root system. If we encountered a root, we just moved a few inches to the side. Another key benefit to vertical mulching is that the Air Spade will also help de-compact the soil, which will improve water movement and gas exchange in the soil. Afterwards, we backfilled the holes with compost and covered the top 1-3 inches with topsoil. You may re-seed grass if you’d like. It is important to lightly tamp the soil down to not leave large air pockets that may dry out the roots and to water the root system once you’re finished. Recapping, the key benefit of vertical mulching is to generate healthier soil structure and in-turn, promote tree root growth! #verticalmulching #trees #treework #arborist #arboriculture

Interesting read and detailed article by Lisa Krieger in the San Francisco Mercury - To build back burned forests, California needs a lot more seeds - As forests succumb to ever-fiercer wildfires, the state seeks to scale up the growth of new seeds and sprouts. “After decades of forest mismanagement that created an era of megafires, there’s a critical shortage in quality seed stock, trained personnel, storage and growing space for tiny seedlings.” “The state of California once supported three tree nurseries — in Ben Lomond, Magalia and Davis — which produced about 6 million trees per year for landowners all over the state. Now two of these nurseries are gone, casualties of a long-ago state budget crisis.” “Meanwhile, American Forests is collaborating with the state and federal government in the Reforestation Pipeline Partnership to boost seed collection, processing, storage, nursery production and planting.” Sound familiar. Very common challenges for forest managers across North America. Great to see a Not-For-Profit like American Forests collaborating with state and federal agencies. Addressing the increasing demand for forest restoration will require the efforts and collaboration of many not just a few. It will be critical that the appropriate resources are committed, and the necessary incentives are provided to encourage investment in the sector.

Temperature is our throttle! When growing forest seedlings, temperature affects many plant processes that control growth, both directly and indirectly. What type of grower are you? Myself, I start off with the petal to the metal to get up to cruising speed. Once sufficient photosynthetic area has developed, I adjust as necessary, depending on the species, stocktype and time of year. However eventually I will lose that control once the crop is moved outside, or the greenhouse sidewalls and/or roof is taken off. #ArbutusGroveNursery #TreeGrowing #ForestNursery #Seedlings

Wow, Fully Mechanized Tree Harvesting.... Note: This is a tree farm by the Columbia River in Oregon, it's right next to I-84, and it's 10 miles long. The trees that are planted grow super fast, and it's in the arid part of the Gorge. They cut them down, and replant right away. By the time they finish logging the plot they start over, again and again. It's no different than planting and harvesting carrots. Via IG elite_florestal_rs
