Today we celebrate #internationalwomensday and this month Dan and Jamie will be hosting a panel of female veterans for our regular podcast The All Round Look. They'll ask the question why fewer female veterans appear to move into the Defence sector roles than their male colleagues. Do female veterans have the same expectations as male veterans? Do they feel they have more choices as they look to a second career than men do? Do they feel as confident in their own abilities? How much do the culture and values of a company matter to a female veteran and what practical examples can we give to make sure that both SMEs and larger companies are doing all they can to attract a balanced, diverse workforce that includes an equitable number of female veterans? We are looking forward to this being a lively chat with a panel of highly experienced female veterans from a variety of backgrounds. This week, time is on my mind—and frankly, it’s always on my mind. It’s one of the most valuable resources I have, so it’s important that I invest it wisely. Yet often, I talk with people who don’t fully understand that it’s a finite resource. We can recycle, reuse, or repurpose almost everything in life, but that’s just not possible with time. When I finish writing this post, the time I have used to do so will be gone. Forever. I won’t be able to get it back. You won’t be able to get back the time you spend reading this either, so I feel a responsibility to make it worthwhile. Thus, I’ll get to the chase. Honored to answer Context VC call as I reflect on Veterans Day 2024. There’s no denying that military recruiting has faced serious challenges recently. One fact stands strong: the U.S. is, and must remain, the leader of the free world...and that requires a strong, capable military. So I'm sharing a quick look at my journey with the hopes of inspiring those who are considering military service to our country: Why I Joined: To be part of the greatest military that’s ever existed. And, yeah…to get my college paid for. 🙂 When & Where I Served: US Air Force from 2009 - 2021. Germany, Colorado, Virginia, Ohio, Afghanistan (2011), Kosovo (2012), and Kuwait (2020). What I Learned: Serving taught me the meaning of "service before self" and instilled a relentless work ethic no matter the situation. Where I Am Now: Today, because of my military service, I am able to lead the SightLine Ventures Inc. team of expert operators help tech startups and established small businesses navigate the complexities of working with the DoD. Every moment is worth it when I see the warfighter getting their hands on cutting-edge tech to give them a real edge on the battlefield. To my fellow veterans out there, let’s hear your story. I’m especially challenging the CEO Veterans among us, including Patrick Bet-David, whose book "Choosing Your Enemies Wisely" is hands-down my favorite read of the year and should be part of every military leader's reading list.
