Breaking the Chains of Beauty Standards: Redefining What It Means to Be Beautiful Why do we even need to define beauty with makeup? Who decided that women need layers of foundation, eyeliner, and lipstick to be considered beautiful? It’s almost like we've convinced ourselves that a natural face isn’t good enough, which is absurd when you think about it. Sure, makeup can be fun and artistic, but when it becomes a daily necessity to meet some unrealistic beauty standard, it feels more like a burden than a boost. On top of that, makeup can actually be a bit harsh on the skin. All those products, chemicals, and constant scrubbing to take them off at night—it’s a lot of pressure for something that’s supposed to make us feel better. Isn’t real beauty about confidence, personality, and the glow that comes from within? We shouldn’t need a full face of makeup to see that! The standards of beauty are often shaped by a mix of cultural norms, media influence, and societal expectations. Historically, beauty ideals have been influenced by everything from art and fashion to class distinctions. In modern times, the media—whether through magazines, movies, or social media—has played a massive role in defining what is considered "beautiful." Advertising and the beauty industry itself also push these standards, often to sell products. They create an ideal image that, more often than not, is impossible to achieve naturally. Celebrities, influencers, and models become the faces of these standards, setting a bar that seems ever out of reach. The result? People, especially women, are left feeling pressured to match these ideals by buying products, wearing makeup, or even considering cosmetic surgery. But the question is: why do we follow them? Ultimately, these definitions of beauty are arbitrary and constantly changing. What was considered beautiful a century ago or in another culture might be completely different from today's standards.
