Innovations and human capital need physical space! Mykolaiv Water Hub (MWH) together with German and Ukrainian architects are uniting its forces and expertise to create a flagship project on green, sustainable renovation of the building with implementation of best available water and energy technologies: - Anna Marchenko from Alanus Hochschule für Kunst und Gesellschaft and - Kambysia Karl Hakim-Meibodi from IF Architecture, Wasser Hannover WH e.V. (Zentrum für nachhaltiges Wassermanagement) supported by DBU Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt, German Water Partnership and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH have already conducted the first architectural participatory workshop in Mykolaiv and now together with our local partners from Mykolaiv are coming to Berlin this week. The building allocated by the City Council of Mykolaiv (supported by Oleksandr Syenkevych, Mayor of Mykolaiv) is a 150 years old former boy school. We are delighted that with this project we will be able continue the educational history of the building and push the reconstruction forward into the innovative future of the city. Conference rooms, research labs and office premises will receive new home in Mykolaiv. The yard behind the building will be used for the demonstration purposes of rainwater harvesting technologies. Watch the video that was kindly prepared by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, Diaspora2030. Get inspired and join us in our journey! https://lnkd.in/dEXHjYga

"SuDS: Embracing Nature's Blueprint for Sustainable Water Management Discover how Sustainable Drainage Systems harmonize with nature, fostering resilience and enhancing urban sustainability. SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) are nature-inspired approaches to manage rainfall and surface water runoff in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner. These systems aim to replicate natural drainage processes, using techniques like permeable paving, green roofs, ponds, and swales. SuDS promote water infiltration into the ground, reducing flood risk and enhancing water quality by removing pollutants. Embracing SuDS is a step towards a more sustainable and resilient urban landscape, harmonizing human development with nature's water cycle. #sustainability #drainage #construction #civilengineering #engineering #civilengineer #engenhariacivil #engenharia #innovation #architecture

Sustainable building often means retrofitting existing historical buildings, for example, this middle school that was built in 1923. We often see the intersection of early 20th-century building methods, such as this original chimney, with new technologies like this solar hot water heating system (large metal tank on the left) and condensing boiler system (grey tanks and boilers to the right). Although modernizing historical landmarks has unique challenges, SES knows the net benefits of reducing embodied carbon from the construction process and preserving the historic aesthetic are always worth the effort. #commissioning #buildingcommissioning #historicalbuilding #sustainablebuilding #historicalrenovation

After The Concrete Society's feature on our incredible Sea Hive tiles, we thought we would share our Mumbles Sea-Hive project; a collaboration with BlueCube marine and Swansea University, that represents a pioneering step in sustainable coastal design. The goal? To protect Swansea Bay while actively supporting marine biodiversity 🐠 We developed custom UHPC panels, intricately textured with seaweed and oyster shell patterns. These panels do more than just form a seawall - they’re a habitat designed to attract marine life, playing a critical role in fostering ecosystems that thrive right at the shoreline. We’ve already seen promising results for long-term ecological impact. But the Sea-Hive is about more than statistics; it’s about rethinking how infrastructure interacts with nature. By incorporating textures inspired by the marine environment, we’re giving life to a wall that would otherwise be just concrete. The project serves as an example of how innovation in design can meet sustainability, proving that infrastructure doesn’t have to come at the cost of the environment. This is what the future of marine construction looks like - where every structure has the potential to contribute to the natural world, not just co-exist with it. #MarineInnovation #EcoEngineering #SustainableInfrastructure #UHPC #Biodiversity
