Breaking Down Barriers: In our commitment to fostering disability inclusion, we recognise terminology can be a stumbling block for many employers. That's why we're launching a new series, 'Word of the Week', to demystify key terms. This week, we delve into the world of 'Social Model.' Image description: A pink background image displaying text that defines the "Social Model". The text explains this model as viewing the world of disability as one where societal barriers, such as inaccessible buildings or negative attitudes, cause disability rather than individual physical conditions. #DisabilityInclusion #WordOfTheWeek #BreakingBarriers

“Within those conversations, solutions may actually come, and these might be innovative because they’re designed with the person, not for the person.” With ‘Accessible Communication: Connect, Include and Empower’ the theme for government’s Disability Action Week this week, GVLDA's Accessibility and Inclusion Program Senior Advisor, Andrew Pope, shares the importance of asking questions and engaging in two-way conversation with people with disabilities to make informed and properly inclusive decisions. Starting the conversation can make a big difference to meeting people’s needs. Advancing accessibility and empowering people with disability is one of the legacy foundations in the Elevate 2042 strategy; with the vision that by 2042, we will live in an inclusive, more sustainable and connected society, with more opportunities in life for everyone. World Disability Day: A Day to Empower and Advocate 🌍💙 Today, on World Disability Day, we stand together to celebrate the strength, resilience, and achievements of individuals with disabilities while advocating for a more inclusive and equitable world. 💡 Did you know? Over 1 billion people—about 15% of the world's population—live with some form of disability. Despite being one of the largest minority groups, many individuals face barriers in education, employment, and accessibility. 🌟 This year’s theme reminds us to: ✔️ Promote Inclusion: True inclusion means creating environments where everyone, regardless of ability, can participate fully and equally. ✔️ Break Barriers: Whether physical, social, or attitudinal, removing barriers is key to ensuring opportunity and dignity for all. ✔️ Celebrate Diversity: Disabilities don’t define individuals—they bring unique perspectives, talents, and strengths that enrich our communities. ✨ Let’s take action: Listen and Learn: Hear the stories of individuals with disabilities to better understand their experiences. Advocate for Accessibility: Whether it’s at work, school, or in public spaces, champion universal design and inclusion. Support Empowerment: Highlight and support organizations working tirelessly to empower individuals with disabilities. 🌈 Together, we can create a society where everyone feels seen, valued, and included. Let’s build a world where ability is limitless, and compassion knows no bounds. 💬 What does inclusion mean to you? Connect, Include, Empower Each year, Disability Action Week (DAW) celebrates the invaluable contributions of people with disabilities in our communities. From November 24 to December 1, 2024, we take the time to recognise achievements, foster inclusion, and advocate for greater accessibility. This year’s theme, Accessible Communication: Connect, Include, Empower, shines a spotlight on the importance of communication that caters to diverse needs. We're proud to share how one of DTET's very own programs – the Back to Work program in collaboration with TAFE Queensland – is helping Queenslanders do just that Communication isn’t a one-size-fits-all concept. Ensuring it is accessible means creating opportunities for everyone—regardless of ability or preference—to access, understand, and engage with information effectively. Read on to discover why accessible communication matters, how the Back to Work program is championing accessible communication and how you can spread the word, plus discover other resources https://lnkd.in/gRHRbuMD

This week is Disability Action Week 2024 and we want to take a moment to highlight the fundamental role that accessible communication plays in empowering people with low vision and blindness. At Guide Dogs Queensland, we believe that communication is key to independence, inclusion, and connection for everyone—especially those living with low vision or blindness. By building connections across businesses, communities, and government, we strive to drive meaningful, inclusive change. As a peak body, we advocate for accessibility and inclusion throughout Queensland, championing a future where everyone can participate equally. This Disability Action Week, we’re proud to provide an Accessible Communication Guide to businesses and organisations to review their communication channels – whether it’s through email, website or social media, this guide breaks down the necessary requirements to ensure communication is accessible to all. As we embark on Disability Action Week, I encourage everyone to reflect on how they can champion accessible communication in their workplaces and communities. Together, we can create a more inclusive and connected future for all.
