I had a huge panic attack in the midst of the COVID nightmare. You might laugh (I do now), but I thought I was dying. My heart felt like exploding, and my brain was very clear on the fact that something TERRIBLE was happening to me. I saw myself in the mirror looking for clear signs of... something, but all seemed apparently normal, deepening my confusion. I needed answers, so I started wondering: Am I drugged by something in the food I ordered? Am I food poisoned? Or is it that I reached a certain age (I was then 32), when this ‘little’ problems start to come up as nice surprises with no warning? Or did I have a warning that I completely ignored, thanks to the fact that just thinking about going to a hospital terrified me just as much as the possibility of being sick? I had no idea, but everything was coming to my mind simultaneously, leaving no room for me to think that maybe this was just a huge dose of accumulated, poorly managed, and unprocessed… fear. I called a friend asking for help, and he told me very calmly that the healthcare company I was with had added a telehealth option to their app, where I could have an emergency call with a doctor who would suggest the best course of action according to a triage. He was so calm that I wanted to kill him: I'm dying, don't you see?! I downloaded the app (in such state I honestly don’t know how I did it), and, sure enough, got to see a doctor. Even calmer than my friend, he asked me some questions and determined I was not dying: - Are you sure this is not a stroke or a heart attack or both at the same time??? - No. You just need to breath and it’ll go away. That's the most stupid I've felt in my life: from dying to... siéntese señora. This days I'm working on a #research focusing on understanding #ValueBasedCare, especially #CareCoordination. A huge part of this is how you are treated in and out of a healthcare facility. After the small, tiny glimpse of desperation and vulnerability I went through and experiencing firsthand the importance of being able to access health from home, Im starting to grasp the complexities of what life is for a person with chronic illness, disability, or impairment. The mountains they climb daily throughout the health systems for a better quality of life are really challenging. This is why I love being involved in this project. I get to understand in great detail what others are going through. And having the possibility of designing from the inside, making good use of all this valuable information to improve the healthcare systems is… just… awesome. What about you? Have you gone through a medical situation where technology did or could have made your life easier? Do you know someone going through a tough healthcare journey that I can talk to? Is there a caregiver who would like to share their wisdom with me? Are you part of a startup trying to improve the lives of patients and caregivers? I'd love to hear you out ❤️ Thanks for listening.
