In his weekly article on The New Times (Rwanda), our co-founder JP Fabri shares his thoughts on #CHOGM2024. The 2024 CHOGM in Samoa has reinforced the #Commonwealth’s commitment to a resilient and inclusive future, with a particular focus on the needs of vulnerable regions like #Africa. The discussions emphasised the importance of collective responsibility, unity, and shared resources in confronting the climate crisis and fostering sustainable growth. The call to transform the Commonwealth into a “Common Wealth” is not just a slogan but a commitment to using the organisation’s collective strengths to create equitable opportunities for all member states. The election of Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey from #Ghana as Secretary General is also telling being the first African to occupy the role.

Let's begin the story of African Union ECOSOCC! Before we start the journey, let's look at the foundation: The Awakening (1990s - 2000). Before transitioning from the Organisation of African unity (OAU) to the African Union, the OAU had an ad-hoc relationship with #civilsociety organizations (CSOs). This era saw significant steps towards recognizing CSOs through crucial decisions and charters: 📄1990: Declaration on the political and socio-economic situation in #Africa and the fundamental changes taking place in the world: https://lnkd.in/dKC6kE_4 📄1991: The African Charter for Popular Participation in Development and Transformation: https://lnkd.in/devWNpJw 📄1991: Abuja Treaty establishing the African Economic Community (AEC): https://lnkd.in/dthNTVQh 📄2000: Solemn Declaration on the CSSDCA by the AU Assembly: https://lnkd.in/dxNZ4Fen These milestones set the stage for a more inclusive and people-centered African Union. #ECOSOCC20

💬 "This specific [ACP Business-Friendly] project is supporting the Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC) to enhance the quality impact of #FDI in the country. There are different FDIs investing in strategic sectors, but there is little effort and processes in place to monitor and assess their impact, also in terms of quality contribution to economic #development. So one challenge that the project is addressing is to create the necessary capacity inside the EIC to ensure that these FDIs are genuinely enabled and facilitated to maximize their economic contribution and qualitative impact towards the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs)." said Ms Aurelia Calabro, #UNIDO Representative and Director of the Regional Hub in Addis Ababa, #Ethiopia. ▶️ Watch the video below to learn more about the UNIDO Programme for Country Partnership (PCP) in Ethiopia and how the #ACPBizFriendly Programme, funded by the #EU and the Secretariat of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), fits within that vision.
