🚜 Bridging the Gap for Africa’s Farmers 🌾 In a continent where over 200 million smallholder farmers are the backbone of the economy, it's shocking to realise that less than 3% have access to agricultural insurance. 🌍 This means millions of farmers are left to face unpredictable climate shocks alone, with no safety net to protect their livelihoods and food security. At myUbuntu, we are on a mission to change that. Through our work at Lloyd's Lab, we’ve been refining our #parametricinsurance solution to be more accessible, affordable, and tailored to the needs of African farmers. 🚀 By leveraging cutting-edge technology and the support of industry experts, we are creating insurance products that provide fast, automated payouts triggered by weather data—no bureaucracy, no delays. The journey so far has been transformative, and the insights gained at Lloyd’s Lab are helping us scale our impact. Our goal is simple: to empower smallholder farmers to thrive, not just survive, even in the face of climate change. 🌱 We are excited to keep moving forward, partnering with stakeholders who share our vision of a resilient, prosperous future for Africa. Join us on this journey and help us build a stronger, more secure agricultural sector. 💪🏾 JP Fabri Nicky Gouder Jack Bassett Nigel Daura Gabriele Villa Mark Huxley FRSA Timon Halbach Rupesh Appannah Callum Noone Hattie Armstrong #ImpactInvesting #LloydsLab #myUbuntuInsurance #ClimateResilience #Agritech #AfricanFarmers

Dr. Betty Chinyamunyamu is currently in the spotlight on Africa Daily, broadcasted on BBC World News, as the critical issue of insuring against climate disasters takes center stage. The question at hand: Should farmers invest in insurance to shield themselves from the ravages of climate-induced calamities? In the wake of escalating extreme weather events attributed to climate change, various insurance schemes targeting farmers and entire nations emerge as a critical area of discourse. However, amidst the urgency to adapt, challenges and limitations loom large. During the insightful conversation on Africa Daily, Dr. Saint Kuttu, a Senior Lecturer in Finance and Risk Management at the University of Ghana Business School, and Dr. Betty Chinyamunyamu, the CEO of the National Smallholder Farmers' Association of Malawi (NASFAM), which represents a staggering 130,000 farmers, engage in a nuanced exploration of this complex issue. Despite the undeniable benefits that insurance could offer, Dr. Chinyamunyamu underscores the stark reality faced by subsistence farmers, who often grapple with the dilemma of allocating scarce resources. "Even though they see it as something that would benefit them… they would rather put that dollar into fertilizer which they really need to boost their yields," she elucidates. The conversation delves into the intricate dynamics of balancing immediate needs against long-term resilience, shedding light on the formidable challenges confronting vulnerable farming communities. SOCIAL PROTECTION TOWARDS A JUST TRANSITION FOR SMALL HOLDER FARMERS Nigerian smallholder farmers are responsible for producing an estimated 90% of the country's food. Climate change have negative impact on small holders farmers by disrupting their livelihood during and after climate induced crisis such as flood, drought and land degradation. Traditional farming method also have negative impact on the climate through Green house Gas emission therefore a need to move towards a climate smart agricultural practices. Social protection play critical role towards just transition of farmers towards a green economy by ensuring income security during climate induced crisis, support the purchase of productive assets, and improve investment in health and well-being of small holders farmers. Social protection can also help address the barriers they face towards moving to cilmate smart agricultural practices by supporting investment in assets, promoting disaster insurance, providing access to the right information and training through complementary services. Social protection is essential for a climate mitigation and adaptation strategy for small holders farmers and rural population. This can be achieved through Policy and program alignment, Data and information integration and interoperability, proper financing mechanisms, and coordination at all levels. FAO over the years has supported inclusive social protection in Africa including in #Nigeria and #Somalia. In few weeks, I will be joining FAO team of experts on social protection to advance the right to social protection for all smallholders farmers in #Africa

Every day, farmers across Nigeria wake up with hope, only to be met with the harsh realities of climate change. Unpredictable floods and erratic weather threaten their crops and livelihoods. In 2022, the agriculture sector lost over ₦700 billion due to these challenges. By 2024, floods have displaced over 250,000 people in Northern Nigeria and affected 31.8 million Nigerians, contributing to a growing food crisis. Heabron is dedicated to empowering farmers with climate-resilient tools, financing, and market access to build a resilient agricultural system that ensures food security. We seek partners to expand these efforts, helping farmers adapt and thrive in the face of climate challenges. Together, we can secure a sustainable future for millions. #SmallholderFarmers #ClimateAction #SustainableAgriculture #FoodSecurity #Farmers #Agritech #ClimateResilience #FloodImpact

📰 📢 The ISF signed a grant agreement to extend its support to #Uganda to respond to natural disaster events. This collaboration builds on the successful development and implementation of a climate index-based insurance solution. This initiative is being implemented in partnership with Agro Consortium (U) Limited, a coalition of insurance companies providing agriculture insurance under the Uganda Agriculture Insurance Scheme. The project aims to ensure the continued accessibility of the insurance product, especially for low-income farmers in high-risk areas who are unable to afford unsubsidised rates. 🌍 In the face of climate shocks like drought and floods, insurance is a lifeline for smallholder farmers reliant on rain-fed agriculture. In the case of a failed harvest, an insurance payment gives smallholder farmers access to the funds necessary to plant the following season. 🔑 The necessity of insurance is a key element in our recent calculations that show that smallholder farmers are receiving $151bn less in climate finance than they require to thrive in the face of the climate crisis. Without protection against the intensifying impacts of climate breakdown, smallholder farmers simply cannot build resilience. 🧑🏿🌾 Despite this, sub-Saharan Africa is the sole global region without subsidized agricultural insurance widely available to farmers. As a result, 97% of African farmers lack the coverage and security they need. Subsidizing insurance in sub-Saharan Africa is possible, though. Learn more about how we are providing smallholder farmers with this crucial safety net in our new white paper. 👇🏿

I'm proud to have been involved in establishing Farmers' Hubs in Nigeria with the Foundation for Sustainable Smallholder Solutions (FSSS) and its predecessor. This model has shown promising results for rural agricultural communities across Africa. Farmers' Hubs serve as support centers for smallholder farmers, offering: • Access to quality inputs and mechanization • Affordable, local resources • Advisory services • Opportunities for local agri-entrepreneurs These hubs are helping rural farmers improve their operations and livelihoods. The scalability of this concept is noteworthy. Our experience in Nigeria suggests potential for broader impact across Africa. With FSSS support, these hubs could expand their services to include: • Digital agriculture solutions • Climate-smart farming practices • Market linkages and value chain integration • Sustainable and regenerative agriculture techniques In the face of climate change challenges, Farmers' Hubs may offer viable solutions. They demonstrate how targeted support can help smallholder farmers adapt and contribute to local economies while promoting sustainable practices. I'm proud to have contributed to this project and am interested in its future development. FSSS's continued involvement may further enhance the impact of Farmers' Hubs on African agriculture. #FarmersHubs #FSSS #AgriInnovation #RuralDevelopment #AfricanAgriculture #ClimateResilience

In Nigeria, smallholder farmers are the backbone of our food system. Their hard work puts food on all our tables, and their impact is undeniable. However, access to credit remains a major challenge for these farmers. That's why making credit facilities readily available is an initiative we must all prioritize. By empowering them financially, we empower our entire food system to flourish. The testimonials from these farmers who are beneficiaries of our Input Financing Program have fueled our passion to do more in the ecosystem. The results are not only increasing their farm yields but also improving their livelihoods. We continue in our stead to flashback to our testimonials from the 2021/2022 disbursement season. #SmallholderFarmer #inputDisbursement #Seed #Fertiliser #Agriculture
