In a heartening display of philanthropy, the Patrice Motsepe Foundation has stepped forward to donate R30 million to 26 university student representative councils (SRCs) in South Africa. This significant contribution is aimed at alleviating the financial strain on students by covering registration fees and historical debts. The announcement of this initiative was made by Dr. Precious Moloi-Motsepe, the co-founder and CEO of the foundation, during a dialogue meeting held at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. Dr. Moloi-Motsepe emphasized the importance of supporting students in their educational pursuits and addressing the challenges they face, particularly in the realm of financial accessibility. The R30 million donation will directly benefit SRCs across various universities, providing much-needed relief to students grappling with financial constraints. By easing the burden of registration fees and historical debts, the foundation's contribution seeks to empower students to focus on their academic endeavors without the added stress of financial worries. Moreover, the dialogue meeting served as a platform for student leaders from 26 universities to voice their concerns and propose solutions to pressing issues such as youth unemployment and the uncertain future faced by many. This collaborative effort underscores the significance of engaging with youth voices and harnessing their perspectives to drive meaningful change within society. We wanted to share some amazing news from Uganda – the Ministry of Education has recently committed to building new facilities at one of our partner schools, Kamuganguzi Janan Luwum Secondary School. They have allocated funding for 2 science labs, 4 new classrooms, teachers accommodation, an administration block and new toilets. This is in recognition of the increased enrolment at the school, which we have helped to bring about – by improving existing facilities and funding a school meals programme, both of which have helped to attract new students – and also by supporting a number of pupils through the school through our scholarship programme. The welcoming and inclusive ethos of the school has also been a contributory factor, which made us sure that this was the right school to partner with when we first started working with the school management in 2012.   We are so delighted for the school as this is a massive endorsement of their work and will make such a difference to the future sustainability of the school as this will enable them to attract even more students. Keep a Nigerian Undergraduate in College: TAG Indigent Student Fund Fund Raising Project Imagine having to drop out of college for $75! Crazy right? That is the dilemma many Nigerian Undergraduates are facing today. This is why the TAG Indigent Student Fund (ISF) is seeking your generous contribution towards the 4th cycle of her … The TAG-ISF is an NGO that began January 2024 to support indigent Nigerian Undergraduates in paying their tuition during this difficult time. From the previous batches, we have funded the tuition of over 40 Nigerian undergraduates. However, the demand has increased tremendously as the Nigerian economy worsens. From our last application, over 500 candidates from over 30 universities across Nigeria applied. We will be conducting a fund-raising training and interview for every qualified applicant with the intent to select undergrads in genuine financial crisis and equip their minds, not just their pockets. ✈️REPORT FROM RECENT TRIP TO CONGO by representatives of Education Congo, a US-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing scholarships and other support directly to two leading private universities in the Democratic Republic of Congo. “EMBOUTEILLAGE” The capital city Kinshasa is a marvel of self-organizing traffic, however "embouteillage" (bottleneck traffic jam) is the operative word. The good news is that every single vehicle on the road is crammed full to maximum possible capacity. There are many small yellow buses (public transportation is a good thing!), and most of the motorcycles are "moto-taxis" where up to 3 passengers squeeze onto the motorcycle behind the driver. If "lanes" were to exist and there were to be "carpool" lanes in Kinshasa, all vehicles would qualify! It's true that getting from one place to the next is a jolting, loud and polluted experience. Plus pedestrians and motorcycles are flowing in every possible direction and through every inch of space between cars, trucks and small buses. On the other hand, the reflexes and athleticism involved is amazing to witness, and for the most part, this extraordinary dance is accomplished calmly—accompanied by constant signaling of beeps of all kinds, indicating "I am here behind you" or "cutting in front of you now" much like sonars, but at point-blank range. More intensity at intersections, where laying on of the horn does occur, as in this video. The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), a charity and private limited company that provides a central service between applicants and universities, has decided to launch a new format for personal statement/ statement of purpose from the 2026 academic session. Personal statements are one of the components required for applications to UK universities, and while the format and theme of the questions have remained the same for the past few years, UCAS has now decided to evolve with the changing times.
