New EBAG Report in Progress: The Cost of Youth Development in European Basketball - Economic Analysis of Investments in Youth Development and their Strategic Importance for the Future of European Basketball One of the key determinants of demand for a sports competition is the quality of the game which is directly related to the quality of the players, i.e. better players attract more attention and ultimately create more economic value. The intensity of competition among the (international) basketball leagues for playing talent has been significantly increasing in recent years. While Europe has a long tradition of producing elite players, due to several structural factors, identification, development and retention of talented players are becoming more and more difficult for European basketball clubs. In this study, we are performing an in-depth analysis of European Youth Development model, especially from an economic perspective.

Very interesting two days in Denmark 🇩🇰 talking about the crucial issue of "transition" for young players (from Academies to first teams). Merci European Club Association (ECA) and thank you Pouya Yaghoubinia for the invitation and for the opportunity to engage in a [too short but full of perspectives] panel discussion along with former professional players and therefore experts in transition (?) : Yohan Cabaye, Philippe Senderos, Maxwell Scherrer and Søren Henriksen. I came away with lots of new questions, ideas and perspectives for : 1) a more comprehensive and coherent management of players' transition through an appropriate action plan (respecting a "CSC" rule of consistency, specificity and clarity) #processes 2) a more systematic and rigorous consideration of the social integration process as an integral part of the transition (including longitudinal analysis of group dynamics and screening of young players' integration) #data

#ChangeInActionWeek Finalists in our Innovative Impact Category: 🌟Wāhine Toa is a two-day futsal and football programme for kōhine (adolescent girls), run twice a year by WaiBOP Football Federation. Each cohort for the programme has a maximum of 50 participants, with a general age range of 13-14 years old, nominated by local schools, football and futsal clubs. The main prerequisites are a love of football/futsal, a great attitude, and being keen to learn. The programme includes players of all levels of playing ability - community, competitive, and talent - as well having representation from a variety of clubs and schools across the whole region. 🌟 Hibiscus Coast Football Club has made major progress in increasing girls’ participation in football. Recognising the potential for growth, the club established a Girls Committee and launched various initiatives, including free girls-only events and a successful online auction that raised nearly $5,000 for the program. The club’s Muster Day saw 80 girls aged 4 to 16 engage in games and skill-building, leading to the creation of girls-only teams across all grades for the first time. This success has ultimately led to the development of a Girls Only summer football league, catering to girls from years 0 to 13, focusing on skill development, confidence-building, and enjoyment without the pressure of scores or playoffs. 🌟 The Ethnic Women's Sport Have A Go Program is a safe space to be active and try out a variety of sports in a fully funded, women-only, safe environment. KiaOra Academy noticed that ethnic communities were not able to provide this for their women and girls because they did not have the financial, human and operational resources necessary. So to combat this they worked in collaboration with Christchurch City Council for funding and the RSO's for coaching, equipment and facilities to remove these barriers and provide the program to enable women to feel more confident to be active. How is the success of sports scholarships measured? Are we cultivating schoolboy heroes? How can schools provide the necessary support to nurture the holistic talents of sports scholarship/bursary students and inspire dual-career aspirations?

Because the sport originated in England, it is often assumed that soccer is an Americanism. In fact, the word is thoroughly British in origin. So why is it that Americans (not to mention Canadians, Australians, and others) are likelier to use the word than Brits are? The answer lies in how the sport developed in each country. Although football-type games have been around for centuries, the sport we know today is often said to have begun in 1863, when England’s newly formed Football Association wrote down a set of rules. At the time, it was the most widely played game of its kind in the country, but it wasn’t the only one. Rugby football, named after an English boarding school, was a variation that allowed players to carry and run with the ball to advance it toward the goal. The game played under the Football Association’s rules thus became known as association football. Inevitably, the names would be shortened. Linguistically creative students at the University of Oxford in the 1880s distinguished between the sports of “rugger” (rugby football) and “assoccer” (association football). The latter term was further shortened to “soccer” (sometimes spelled “socker”), and the name quickly spread beyond the campus. However, “soccer” never became much more than a nickname in Great Britain.
