When it comes to tracking elephants for conservation purposes, GPS collars play a crucial role in helping us gather data on their distribution, movements, ranging behavior and how they interact with local communities. While these GPS collars might appear bulky, weighing between 8 and 12 kilograms, the collars are only a minor portion of an adult elephant’s body weight, which ranges from 2,700 to 6,000 kilograms. Making up less than 0.2% of the average adult elephant’s body weight, the collar on an elephant is as comfortable as a necklace on human.
