#Funding #Grant In 2023, most local vector programs reported capacity to conduct a range of surveillance and control activities, but notable gaps remained in routine surveillance, routine control, collaboration with partner programs, and most notably, pesticide resistance testing. ‼️Pesticide industry lobbyists established a “private social network” to counter resistance to pesticides and GM crops in Africa, Europe and other parts of the world, while also denigrating organic and other alternative farming methods. The profiling was part of an effort to downplay the risks of pesticides to health and the environment. Read the investigation ! Sterling work by Lighthouse Reports
I’ve spent the week at #ClimateWeekNYC talking about a number of themes, including how corporate interests propping up our toxic food system deploy the same PR tactics of the oil and gas industry: deny, delay, and demonize your critics. So… it’s fitting that this absolutely must-read, explosive new exposé has just dropped, including the revelations about how Jay Byrne (a PR gun-for-hire I’ve been watching for years) created a secret database of 500 advocates, scientists, and journalists: The profiling is part of an effort – that was financed, in part, by US taxpayer dollars – to downplay pesticide dangers, discredit opponents and undermine international policymaking, according to court records, emails and other documents obtained by the non-profit newsroom Lighthouse Reports. It was unnerving to read my profile, describing in detail my new role at the Global Alliance for the Future of Food, my work on Merchants of Poison, etc. but unlike what sounds like many others—no personal details. So much appreciation for the investigators behind this report and for carey gillam and colleagues for this piece: https://bit.ly/4eIHaax

Over the past year, I've seen a growing body of reports about the impacts of using sewage sludge as a fertilizer. But the issue got me wondering: If we can't use this material on farmland, what should we do with it? And how safe will the alternative be? Read what I learned from the treatment plant operators, health advocates and researchers on the front lines of the growing issue of PFAS contamination. https://lnkd.in/eSB-idjN

You may have heard a bit about PFAS chemicals, which seem like an abstract yet toxic threat. (And they are definitely toxic.) But Chloe Aiello's deep reporting in Inc. Magazine on how they have affected small-business owners-- and how some entrepreneurs and activists are fighting back and devising solutions-- makes the story much more real and grounded. Read part one, here:
Odorless, Colorless Forever Chemicals Are Threatening Small Businesses Across the U.S.

5 Things to Be Thankful for in the Fight Against PFAS There are so many challenges posed by PFAS, or "forever chemicals," but it's important for us to take a moment and acknowledge all the good progress being made and all the reasons to be grateful and have hope for the future. So, here are five things to be thankful for as we work to protect our health and environment: Our Scientists- scientific inquiry has helped us gain a better understanding of the myriad of ways PFAS affects our health, well-being, and environment. Our Communities- public awareness is growing in addressing PFAS contamination, including outreach strategies to inform municipalities about risks and resources. Our Innovators- researchers and businesses are evaluating potential substitutions for PFAS in industrial and consumer products to reduce reliance on these substances. Our First Responders- some fire departments are actively seeking alternatives to PFAS-treated materials and are increasingly aware of the importance of decontaminating gear after exposure to hazardous substances. Our Defenders- industry leaders, policy makers and non-profit organizations have collaborated to develop effective communication and policy development to safeguard human health and the environment. So it's true, the challenges posed by PFAS are significant, but there are many reasons for optimism. There is real progress being made and the collective efforts of many people, companies and governments are working together to address this issue. And, by staying informed, advocating for change, and supporting research and innovation, you can join us and together we can work towards a safer healthier future for ourselves and our children. #PFAS #ForeverChemicals #Firefighters #Science #Thankful #HappyThanksgiving #GreenChemistry #Policy #Environment #PublicHealth

If you have not heard of #PFAS, please read this. Soil and cattle are just one aspect of impact. These “forever chemicals” are in our bodies, our babies, and our brains. The federal government now screens everything from flooring to furniture for options that address PFAS (not PFAS-free options, because there would not be enough choices). This is an example of how a sole focus on profit is horrible for society. Even the CEOs of companies who are poisoning us (and our food, our earth, our children..) with PFAS have it in their system. And it’s really really hard to get out. Scary stuff. This seems way more important than most of the news in the headlines, I’m glad to see the NYT cover this. John Oliver also does a great episode on it, several years ago. What can you do? Stop using plastic water bottles immediately. Stop using anything that is stain resistant. Don’t use flame retardant kids pajamas. Get educated on these 8-chain carbon chemicals and how they might be worse than climate change to our bodies, ecosystem, food, oceans, and air.
EPA took decades to act on PFAS. Now it's everywhere. https://lnkd.in/gCptSE_h
