I have a degree in graphic design. 🎨 How did I end up in logistics? 🚢 My first job out of college was at a non-profit arts organization. And while professionally it was a dream come true for me, there was little room for growth. I was working remote and had been quarantined in my studio apartment for a year because of Covid-19. I was making $12.50 an hour despite my bachelor’s degree. I felt stuck. So, in 2021, I took a big risk and started working at a hotel in downtown Chattanooga. Looking back, I can’t believe I had the nerve to quit my fancy-on-paper job and become a waitress — but I have never regretted it. Serving brought me back to life. Suddenly, waiting tables at a rooftop bar, I had a purpose again. There were people to take care of and talk to, there was a sense of urgency, and I was earning more than I ever had before. After six months of serving full-time, I decided to try to scale up my design business. I got to work on some exciting projects with really great clients, but there just wasn’t enough work coming in and I was bleeding my savings dry. I applied and interviewed for jobs at companies I wanted badly to work for — but nothing stuck, and I was feeling nervous. Eventually, I took a job at Starbucks to help alleviate the financial stress. I would get up at 3:45 in the morning to help open the store, and be home around 11am to work on my business. One day I was operating the drive-thru window so early it was still dark out. I handed a guest his coffee and asked about his plans for the day. He said he was headed to work early, but he loved his job, so it was okay. I asked him where he worked, and he said Steam Logistics. The name rang a bell for me. Madison Waddell and Tiffany Malapanes had both worked with me at the hotel but had left to work at Steam. I reached out to them and looked for an open position on Steam’s website. As luck would have it, Tiffany was taking a sabbatical soon and would return to take a different position in a few months. She recommended me as her replacement on the Enterprise team. After a phone screening and an interview, I was offered the Enterprise Coordinator position and my life in #logistics began. It’s been nearly two and a half years since then, and now I’m an account manager moving freight from all over the world. I love how dynamic the industry is, always a fresh challenge to meet and a new skill to learn. I find it so gratifying to work in an industry where there is such a push for optimization, for improvement and growth. The cliched thing to say here would be that I have never looked back. But the truth is that I look back all the time, with immense gratitude to be where I am today.
