One airport with huge ambition to stimulate the uptake of alternative fuels is Rotterdam The Hague Airport ✈ In 2023 it was chosen to carry out testing and demonstration for the storage and refuelling of liquid hydrogen fuel on the airside as part of the EU-funded TULIPS – Green Airports consortium.🌱 We provided technical and strategic advisory to help secure the foundational permitting that would make the project possible. The aim? To take liquid hydrogen one step closer to reality in aviation. 👏 Explore what this means for our industry here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eek_eXYK Gopal Kandiyoor | Vivekanandhan Sindhamani | Daan van Dijk | Tom Mockett | Christine Driessen | Eoghan Davis | Filip Saad | Joeri Aulman | Simone van Dijk | Paul Mink #SustainableAviation #Hydrogen #GreenAirports

My latest piece - green groups are now backing #efuels for #maritime and #aviation. This should come as no surprise to stakeholders. The era of policy brinksmanship (for lack of a better word), is over. Now, we are entering the era of implementation and due diligence. Perhaps, this will also be the era of the technocrat? #transport #sustainability #policy
T&E Calls on Sustainable Transport Commissioner to Prioritise E-Fuels for Aviation & Maritime "The contents of T&E’s letter, which was undersigned by the organisation’s Executive Director, william todts may surprise many industry stakeholders who, up until now, have viewed Transport & Environment (T&E) as a repeat naysayer on many of the private sector’s decarbonisation proposals. This letter, however, underscores a shift in T&E’s communication strategy on many of the most divisive issues, such as e-fuels, as all stakeholders move away from the period of brinkmanship which defined the previous Commission towards a period of, hopefully rational, implementation. This is a very interesting paper - congratulations to Marylin Bastin, Laurent TABERNIER and the EUROCONTROL team! Some conclusions: - long-haul flights account for <10% of departures but >50% of aviation CO2 emissions - producing the required SAF to decarbonise long-haul flights would require a significant increase in green/clean energy availability - initially centralising SAF supplies at key airports with predominantly long-haul traffic could enhance efficiency, reduce infrastructure investments, and maximise environmental benefits. For example, the following would all have the same emissions reduction effect: 10% SAF blend at all 2165 airports in the 44 countries of the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) 11% SAF at the 34 airports with most long-haul flights 12.5% SAF at the 20 airports with most long-haul flights or 20% SAF at the top five airports (This could greatly reduce the logistics costs of SAF distribution, assuming the goal is to reduce emissions as much as possible for as low a cost as possible) - the study assumes that of the SAF used in Europe in 2050 (70% of the European aviation fuel requirement, in line with the REFUEL-EU Aviation regulation), half will be bio-SAF and half will be e-SAF. - The feedstock needed for the bio-SAF by 2050 could be composed of 50% of the used cooking oil in Europe plus 5.5% of the agricultural/forestry residues and municipal waste. - The electricity needed for the e-SAF by 2050 will require 73 nuclear reactors (1650MW each), or 8,200 offshore wind turbines, or an area of solar panels equal to a 43km x 43km square (!) - replacing aircraft older than 10 years could reduce the carbon emissions of the long-haul fleet by approximately 10%, also diminishing their SAF requirements All in all, this underscores the urgency not just of scaling up SAF production, but of being smart about how we use that SAF to get the biggest bang for the buck (or kgCO2e for the €). Well worth a read.
Access to sufficient amounts of clean energy will determine #aviation’s ability to decarbonise. In our new EUROCONTROL think paper we have explored the feasibility of producing sufficient sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to meet the ReFuelEU blending mandate for long-haul flights, as well as the volume of electricity necessary to generate the required SAF. The Think Paper uses extensively the fuelling estimation tool available via our EUROCONTROL #FlyingGreen platform- a centralised source of information regarding the transition from fossil fuel to sustainable propulsion modes. Some of the 🗝 findings of the new Think Paper: ✈ 🌍 Long-haul flights (>3,000 km) represent less than 10% of all departures, but contribute over 50% of aviation emissions. Initially centralising SAF supplies at key airports with predominantly long-haul traffic could enhance efficiency, reduce infrastructure investments, and maximise environmental benefits (CO2 emissions, local air quality, and non-CO2, including contrail reduction), as well as ease the transition to deploying SAF at all European airports. 🔌 By 2050, meeting SAF needs for long-haul flights will require ~870 TWh/yr of electricity, with 685 TWh/yr for e-bio and synthetic SAF and 185 TWh/yr for SAF co-products. The amount of electricity needed would be, for example, equivalent to 1.8 times France's total electricity production in 2023 (or 24% of the ECAC area) or equivalent to 73 nuclear reactors. 🚗 🚢 The energy challenge is a common challenge for all transportation sectors using fossil-based energy, and synergies with other transport modes could help accelerate the production of SAF. The progressive electrification of road transport offers a huge opportunity to reallocate a large part of the EU’s existing biofuel production capacity to the production of SAF. In turn, aviation decarbonisation, by producing 24 Mt of SAF, will also contribute to maritime decarbonisation by producing 7.5 Mt of biodiesel as a co-product. 💶 Replacing aircraft older than 10 years could reduce the carbon emissions of the long-haul fleet by approximately 10%, also diminishing their SAF requirements Thank you very much to Laurent TABERNIER for the excellent work on this! The whole EUROCONTROL Think Paper is available here: https://lnkd.in/ePB2a8VK
