📢 AusBiotech Early-Stage Innovation Forum opens AusBiotech is calling for expressions of interest from researchers and inventors interested in pitching their innovation at our upcoming Early Stage Innovation Forum (#ESIF) to be held at the AusBiotech 2024 national conference in Melbourne. The ESIF rapid-fire pitch competition provides presenters the opportunity to pitch their early-stage innovation to a panel of expert judges for feedback, with the October 30 ESIF competition focusing on early-stage human #therapeutics and enabling technology projects. This exclusive opportunity offers early-stage projects and technologies the chance to gather feedback essential for commercialising early-stage projects and technologies from a panel of industry experts as well as corporate VCs and early-stage investors. During a seven-minute presentation, presenters will be required to outline the problem they are trying to address, their innovative approach to solving the problem, the technology’s competitive advantage, development plan and investment proposal. Submissions are open to investible projects from Australian research institutions or companies seeking seed or series A investment. Applications close 1 September. The discussion at Hack Summit Lausanne highlights a growing concern about microplastics and chemicals in existing materials. On the second day of the International Benchmark Biointelligence trip to Boston, USA the delegation visited LabCentral, a non-profit-organization that provides shared lab space for innovative biotech startups. With its 125 start-ups and over 1000 scientists and entrepreneurs it’s also a platform to network and experience Boston’s innovative climate in the life science sector. More information on the idea behind LabCentral is and which specific challenges it’s start-ups do address is explained in the video clip below by Johannes Fruehauf, founder and CEO of LabCentral and Biolabs.    One of the start-ups currently active in LabCentral is Anthology, which is developing a platform technology that creates highly diversified and evolved genomes. Starting with filamentous fungi, the start-up does not only target protein manufacturing but also the utilization of renewable energy sources and making bio-based products at scale.   Driving over to McDermott Will & Emery and enjoying the view on the 58th floor, it became clear that Boston is a highly innovative and therefore well-funded area. Australia’s synthetic biology future is accelerating into overdrive — CSIRO and Main Sequence have today released an updated roadmap showcasing how SynBio could unlock over $30 billion in revenue and 50,000 new jobs in Australia by 2040. 💪 Looking back on Australia’s initial SynBio roadmap in 2021, the  ecosystem has continued to evolve, welcoming new innovators, funding and support for the burgeoning sector, including: 🔬 A total of $44.5 million awarded for research projects related to synthetic biology ⭐ 16+ new synthetic biology-enabled start-ups and spin-outs created 💰 $363 million in capital investments raised by 17 Australian-founded synthetic biology companies Working with startups such as Cauldron Ferm, Samsara Eco and Uluu, we know that Australia’s SynBio industry represents a huge opportunity for our future, and this is only the beginning. Danish biotech startup Meat Tomorrow has secured DKK 4.1 million (approximately $607,200) in funding to accelerate its cultivated meat technology development. The company is focusing on pluripotent stem cell lines to advance sustainable cell-based meat production. This investment was led by Keystones and featured participation from Danish Business Angels. The funding will support expanded R&D efforts and foster industry partnerships.
