Such important and pivotal coaching to help nurses stay in nursing. Nurturing self is so important to stay in a positive mindset when managing the work environment.
Director of the Diploma of Tropical Nursing (LSHTM), Lecturer in Nursing Science (UEA) and Lecturer in Extreme Medicine (Exeter University)
Yesterday at LSHTM the Professional Diploma in Tropical Nursing Team held our first two listening events (one online, one in person). It was so valuable to hear diverse perspectives of the attendees: alumni, staff, employers, researchers, and other interested parties. This work will shape the future of the PDTN and help us ensure it is reflective of future of global nursing needs. If you are employer of PDTN graduates, or have particular insight into the long term learning needs of nurses working in low resource settings and with underserved communities, I’d love to hear from you too!

The Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care has released of the Nursing and Midwifery 2023 National Health Workforce Dataset (NHWDS).
Some quick figures I found interesting:
- there are 326,838 RNs employed in nursing. 292,509 of these are in clinical roles.
- 78% obtained their qualification in Australia; 55% born in Australia
- 87% are female (very small improvement from 88% the year before)
- 74% work in metro locations
- 1.16% are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander nurses (a slight drop from 1.48% in 2022)
- The average age is 42

As a former nurse working at the intersection of #healthcare, #sustainability and #CarbonLiteracy, I found it fantastic to attend the first Nursing and Midwifery #GreenWeek session today.
Today's Key Takeaways:
👩⚕️ Nurses and Midwives possess significant influence in enhancing both healthcare and sustainability efforts- explore unconventional ideas
🌏 Sustainability encompasses diverse aspects and is the responsibility of all individuals- it intersects with everyday healthcare and extends beyond carbon considerations
🌇 Temperatures and extreme weather events are worsening, even in the UK, with record breaking global temperatures in 2023. 2024 could be hotter. We must adapt and mitigate
💀 Air pollution is ever present - air quality is a human right, not a privilege. (The WHO stated that 99% of people are not living in areas with adequate air quality). We must try to avoid single occupancy cars where ever possible to do so.
Actions:
🔗 Connect with your organisation's sustainability lead and learn about current initiatives and how you can participate and contribute.
🔎 Find out about air quality in your local area / where you work: addresspollution.org - learn about what's happening with your local council to tackle air pollution. Find out what's happening at your hospital - start an anti-idling campaign.
🚴♂️ Consider incorporating active travel by cycling or walking part or all of your commute to work. Aim to change your travel habits to a more sustainable option, like public transformation at least once a week, or at a frequency that feels achievable for you.
I am already looking forward to tomorrow's event and hearing more about the fantastic initiatives underway to support the healthcare system to decarbonise.
To find out more about how the The Carbon Literacy Project Healthcare Toolkit (currently funded for use by NHS colleagues until 2026) can assist in embedding a low carbon healthcare culture, please get in touch at healthcare@carbonliteracy.com.

A decision of a Fitness to Practise Committee of the NMC to suspend a registrant for a period of six months for findings which involved dishonesty, was challenged on appeal by the Professional Standards Authority (and not resisted by the NMC): Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care v Nursing and Midwifery Council & Anor [2024] EWHC 691 (Admin) Sheldon J Setting aside the committee’s decision, the court nonetheless did not consider that striking off the register was the only option reasonably available to the panel and remitted the decision so that the question of sanction could be looked at in light of the findings that the panel should have made. #lawnews#legalnews#barristers#solicitors#lawstudents#nurses#healthcarelaw#regulatorylaw

2moNot surprising in the least Nadine and it may go higher if we can’t support the staff who remain. its like a war of attrition against chronic disease.
