Future of Healthcare As we look ahead to the next decade, the United States healthcare system will continue to evolve and may even undergo significant change in structure. Healthcare system changes will have important implications for AHCs not only in the patient care mission, but also throughout all the missions. Between 5 and 10 years from now, the situation will become critical for Americans. The costs for employers will continue to rise, causing many to desire exiting the healthcare business; the number of uninsured people will also continue to increase with a widening gap between what can be afforded and what is available. The ranks of the uninsured will extend into the present middle class. These disenfranchised individuals, and their employers, may vote for a change in the healthcare system. We have recently described how that system might achieve healthcare coverage for all. #healthcareforever #healthisimportant #healthcareindustry

🔷We thought we'd share a couple of perspectives on Social Determinants of Health today. Keep in mind that if we really want to address improved health outcomes and lower total cost of healthcare results, it depends not on 'cheaper' services (units of service x cost per unit) but on reducing the demand for healthcare services. ✅Real and sustainable improvement cannot (by definition) originate from the same system that is motivated to offer services in order to maintain its own economic viability. Change comes from domain reduction, not rationing use or unit costs. 👍Please see both posts. 🔷This first post is from the US Playbook for Addressing SDoH (2023 publication). 🔷✅The main take away (in our view) is that federal policy drives federal funding and the most consistent source of federal funding for policy comes from the federal government through programs like Medicare, Medicaid, ACA/Marketplace, Research Grants, etc., These policies are designed and implemented through the executive branch of federal government and despite much rhetoric remain remarkably consistent over the years. Federal policy is consistent (for the most part) and drives funding which drives change initiatives. 🔷❓What are the near term priorities for federal policy for SDoH? 🔷Housing Security/Stability 🔷Food Security 🔷Access to Education ...and the framework used by the federal government includes (is based on) the health people 2030 constructs which include: 🔷Healthcare Access & Quality 🔷Education Access & Quality 🔷Economic Stability 🔷Social & Community Context 🔷Neighborhood & Built Environment ✅The US healthcare provider services (as currently configured) is ill-equipped to address most all of the above SDoH factors and drivers, rather these factors are driven primarily through public policy, funding, community based solutions/organization. On the other hand, tremendous effort is expended on the formal healthcare system because it is organized, available and politically active (not to mention there's much profit to be made). #SDOH #socialdeterminantsofhealth #healthcare #healthpolicy

Morningstar calls it “a new low for healthcare affordability”: Research by West Health-Gallup finds that nearly half of U.S. adults have skipped needed care in the past three months because they couldn’t afford it. Even worse, 1 in 10 people ages 18 to 49 were considered “cost desperate,” meaning they were recently unable to pay for care or medicine and have no access to quality care. This is why we will never stop working to make health care more affordable. https://lnkd.in/eCm-Cgqb

Existing funding of fee-for-service medical benefits payments must be redesigned and supplemented by payments that allow practices to engage a range of other health professionals to create health-care teams. This should be the principal direction of primary care reform, and the final report of the scope of practice review should make that clear. It must focus on the overall goal of better primary care, rather than simply the aspirations of individual health professionals, and working to a professional’s full scope of practice in a team, not a professional silo. In parallel, governments – state and federal – must ensure all health professionals are used to their best of their abilities.
